A lot of anime original content. A1 surely is dedicated. Fleshing out the story more than expected. Slower pace this time around, both due to taking their time with exposition but also anime original scenes. It adapted chapter 11, 12, and the start of 13 from the manhwa, so about 2.25 chapters total. (Episode 1 adapted 3.5 chapters, while episode 2 adapted 6.5 chapters.)
It seems very likely that it'll end after the Igris fight with this slower pace, so around chapter 42-45. Some people were predicting 60 which is unlikely now.
We likely won't know till cour 1 ends…

it seems that the anime is converting 3 to 4 chapters per episode, so i would like to see how far the anime gets until the 12th episode

Yes the Solo Leveling manga is much more intense that the anime but in my opinion the anime is a good watch still

all i can say is that's it, it just felt like the episode was 5 minutes... would have liked to see him beat the dungeon.

i feel like the pacing just doesnt work for an anime. its good that theyre faithful and the animation is good but this season is going nowhere at this pace

I'm happy with the pacing. It's nice to see something not trying to blaze through the story at 7000 mph for once, and I hope it stays that way. Slow is not a bad thing.
But this episode has other problems... 1 & 2 were strong imo, but this one was a drop in quality in terms of characters.
- You don't just go to visit a hospitalized person, taking the effort to drive/walk/whatever, only to leave after 2 mins. She should have been there for at least 2 hours, possibly most of the rest of the day. They could have even made it be the reason he failed the quest, since it'd be weird to start doing pushups in that situation.
- Where are the MCs established character traits? His pattern recognition, ability to solve problems, and act under pressure were crucial in episode 2, yet here he cant figure out how notifications work even though he owns a smartphone?
- As another user said, he should have at least used those traits to avoid the centipedes at least for SOME of that punishment duration.

  Its so slow though, like we only got intro to this powers, and start of dungeon. They should have atleast completed the initial part of dungeon + monologue and end before boss fight.

Typical case of the director not being able to recognize the differences in mediums. An anime adaptation's purpose is not to animate every goddamn slide of the manga/manhwa but to show the viewers something the other medium can't but you can't do that with a pacing like this where even the short flashbacks at the beginning of the chapters get animated.

They focus too much on the mc's impotent phase, already wasted 3 episodes on it. The visual atmosphere, the animations, and the music is pretty good, though. But they set the pacing as if they had 24 episodes which they don't.

BRUV WHAT DO U EXPECT FROM THE STUDIOS. If u dont animate scene by scene it is a "bad adaptation". If they do animate it "it just doesnt work" like lower down ur expectations. Same thing happened during the release of TOG as it got unnecessary hate

I've gotta say that I was pretty disappointed by this episode, and the adaptation as a whole. There's way too many irrelevant conversations, way too many lore dumps, and the MC just comes off as pathetic.

You'd expect the sister to have been worried for her brother, considering half his party died in the dungeon, and considering that those who made it out were traumatized, had lost limbs and all that. But nope. Not the officials either. All they did was test his mana with a stone, and then walk on their merry way.

And Jingwoo just accepts that the world now has a game UI? And manages to outrun a high level monster for four hours straight with his supposed 10 agility? The least the adaptation could've done was shown him using his so-called wits (that they showed off in episode 1) to either hide in some form of cave, or to escape to higher ground. But nope, we're left to expect that the guy without a bit of muscle managed to run for four hours without any water or rest in an arid desert.

I'd have expected the adaptation to fix these issues, and to make it more believable. But no. They're just adapting the source material page for page, with no desperately needed improvements.

From what I remember, his sister doesn't know everything that happened, they never told her outside of the fact that her brother was in hospital. Im fairly sure this was explained in the manwha, but it might've been in a later chapter.

Yeah for me it was lacking, especially after binge reading the manhwa this week. And from the waking up point, SungJinWoo seemed a bit too excited from the news that he might be a reawakened person. The anime makes him look like a generic shonen protagonist and not really a downer and depressed person.
And it might be just me or did they make the sister a bit too tall, even here in her first entrance. She seems to be towering over him..

Personally I feel the quality dropped too.

Was the guy that accompanied Jin_Cheol the assassin from a lter chapter? Tae-Shik Kang?

I do think he was excited with that possibility in the manhwa as well, the emotions are just more clearer when animated. About the height...well i didn't even notice it...

I get the exact same feeling out of the anime as I did with the manhwa many years ago and that somehow fills me with a sweet sense of nostalgia.

The feeling that if I ever think too much about what's going on while watching I'll grasp every single tiny thing that shouldn't sit right with me, then get critical and roast the anime to ash.

It's not good. At all. Yet, somehow, it's not that bad either. It's good as long as you turn your brain off. You just gotta put up with the cons to enjoy its good sides, I guess.

Now as much as I don't want to be analytical with this anime in the slightest (it doesn't deserve it), I have to admit this episode treated us to such an impressive display of piled bullshit that I had my fair share of troubles trying to keep my brain dead. The scene in which we are to believe a 24 years old as languid as a new-born spoony managed to escape a literal crawling carnage on the rampage was especially overwhelming.

Mehhhh.

These comments are so dumb, the people that are right now complaining about A-1 adapting the source material faithfully are the same people who get angry when a studio doesn't follow it. Like make up your mind.
A-1 is making an absolute banger of a series right now and if you and your tiktok 5 seconds brain can't sit around for the slow paced buildup just stop watching

Mushoku Tensei was a faithful adaptation and still had a good pacing. The anime could have condensed episode 1 and 2 into a single episode and tease up the leveling system for episode 2

  Look at Mushoku season 2. It skipped and rushed over details and many LN readers were very vocal about it. A good example of good pacing in LN adaptation would be Eminence In Shadow, adapting 1 volume into 10 episodes.
  The pacing of Solo Leveling is actually good; the weekly airing kills the momentum though, but that's not its fault and it wouldn't happen if you were binge-watching. I'd even argue that it goes beyond the manhwa to set things up and contextualize the world, all amounting to the plot climaxes. My only guess for people complaining about poor pacing is simply manhwa readers rushing through the manhwa plot and only caring for fight/hype scenes.

I haven't read the manwha, but I did think that this episode was one of the better episodes compared to many.

Sure, you could say it felt generic, but if it did, it did it well.

I mean,, A1 is doing a wonderful job in adapting the manhwa faithfully, which is rare for korean manhwas, but I do agree the pacing is way too slow, I was hoping this episode would cover the entirety of instance dungeon fight but i guess its fine either way, as long as they dont mess up the later parts of story

With this episode wrapping up the first 3 episodes, I can fortunately say that the first episode is not the exception. This is a very solid adaptation. We have proper pacing which doesn’t rush through the plot intending to somehow end the story within 12 episodes (looking at previous manwha adaptations), and while limited the team ensures the most important action bits are of high quality and that’s where the anime also shines. Direction-wise, the atmosphere and intensity despite being limited is well conveyed. I don’t think it’s gonna go downhill from here.

I like the script as well, very well organized and like you said, doesn't jump to conclusions... It actually builds up the tention leaving people "hanging" and wanting more, which is something I appreciated very much.

The manwha is definitely better but I feel A-1 Pictures still have done a great job. I only wish the first episde was like a 45 min episode. I'm looking forward to episode 3

I feel like it's only slow for us since we're watching weekly.
Once the seasons are over people will probably praise it for taking it's time and adapting faithfully since they can just binge each and every episode

"I see issues with this story" is not an attack on you, or your enjoyment of the series. I see no hate in the original comment, they're just stating critiques. Hate and critique are not the same, and if you carry that attitude to real life things are gonna get real dicey real fast

Anime viewers need to learn to distinguish length and 'content'. Just because events took place doesn't mean the plot was advanced, characters developed, or the story deepened. If you're not "storying" your story, then that's a bad story.
Any writer being paid to adapt a manhwa should be smarter than me. They're being paid to write full time while I'm just some idiot with a computer. If I am confident I could write a better adaptation of Solo Levelling, that's...not great.

Exactly. An anime adaptation is supposed to improve on the source material, which this anime isn't really doing. All it's doing is animating the panels, which isn't even necessary considering the art of the manga.

this take is so dumb cuz if it followed the manhwa page by page it would be 2x faster, it is taking advantage of its medium as anime being methodical thats why its pacing is slower. i mean if you wanted dogshit directing and half baked fast forward animation like usual shounen you have something like jjk go watch that

You're only saying this because it's being released weekly. All of the chapters of the manwha are already out, there's no waiting requred, you can binge it all. If you don't like the pacing, come back when the anime has finished airing and your "problem" will be non-existent.

For instance in the manwha the penalty section was just as short but you didn't see the nurses wondering where the patient disappeared to for four hours. The pacing of the manwha is breakneck and adding context helps a lot.

I don't understand people's issues with the adaption so far its good. The best part about this series though it how insane it gets later on, and the art in the manwha becomes incredible with very large scale epic fights. If they fuck up the animation/art there I will be disappointed, but so far its great.

It's a repeat of SAO. Sure we'll get the hype fight scenes, but so much of the interesting detail might be there, but only for source material viewers.

All the interesting stuff that makes the source material click will be missed, because you can't animate what was in this anime's source material at that level. It's already clear to me that this adaptation is as mid as you can get. If I want to experience solo leveling, the optimal way is to go back and re-read the manwha.

All I can say is good luck. Can see from the replies that this is going to be one of those shows where the fans of the source material are going to jump all over you if you say anything that isn't absolute praise for the show.

And I agree. Director at least needs to be able to recognize the differences between media. It's an adaptation. It has to do things that fit an animated format more. Otherwise you end up with a show where the hardcore fans are happy but everyone else just shrugs at a disappointing series.

Yeah, I get the same impression... Well, they don't even have enough reading comprehension to realize that I wasn't criticizing the source material but rather a directorial decision, which is not even a matter of studio or budget and they still took it personally, so there isn't much you can do about that.
A good example for the proper understanding of media is The Eminence in Shadow. I love both the novels and the anime but they provide a completely different experience, even my favored characters are different depending on the medium because someone in the production team realized that they can go all out with the stuff that would have been hard to deliver in writing and the end result was awesome.

Some, yeah, but at least here in AniList most manhwa readers apparently want the generic isekai treatment, in which they butcher up and compress 10 chapters into a single 20 minute episode.

  As someone that has not read it the pacing feels fine. It's not that it was boring or anything like that.
  Knowing some of A-1 past works I am scared about animation that drops in quality in future episodes, but for now it looks good.
