I prefer the Flamme flashback in the manga. Same as when she joins the party. The panel after Himmel speaks are great.

  @VinegarLove yea I also prefer the flamme flashback in the manga! was kinda disappointed that they omitted the actual panel that shows her with her parents, I thought they'd at least include it as a lil snippet :(

  Yeah those panels of the party went fast in the anime, you can see it by pausing it. Even so, the adaptation has been superb that it doesn't bother me at all lmao.

The only other adaptation I've seen on this level was Mob Psycho 100, but even then this one is just on another level.

I kinda get what you mean but I don't necessarily regret it. Manga had different strengths like the joy of flipping the panel during the mana reveal is something else too. I mean even knowing what happens in advance in the anime kinda makes you pay attention more to the detail, the animation, godlike music and all that which is crazy good in this adaptation

I have instantly started buying and reading the manga after the first 4 episodes dropped but I only read up to the chapters that have been adapted in the episodes because the anime just does such a stellar job with the music and animation that I would rather experience it first time in animated form. Week after week I am just sitting here with an open mouth because it just gets better and better.
And I say this as someone who normally always reads the manga first. Especially since the manga here is also extremely good.
The next volume is laying right beside me but I rather wait another week and see the episode than spoil myself from being blown away by whatever happens next.
Honestly the best "new" adaptation I have seen in years.

  Yep. Madhouse really pulled out the big guns for this. Such a stellar adaptation, especially when compared with the rushed/lazily animated stuff Mappa has been pumping out with Attack on Titan and Vinland Saga S2.

    I can't talk about Vinland Saga S2 but for the AoT finale Mappa pulled out everything they could given the source material, I can't hate on it from a technical standpoint - it looks great. Part 2 more so than Part 1 though.
    I still don't like the ending but that's more from a story perspective.
    Frieren feels like a completely different thing though. I really hope S1 is extremely successful so we might see a continuation some years down the road.
    But please, also done by Madhouse with the same care and attention to detail they have put into S1.
    Definitely my Anime of the Year.

Aura showed us how to throw away 500 years of training in 20 seconds (only because Frieren was magnanimous and gave her 20 otherwise it was even less) jokes aside, as I expected the fight was very short, but having it end practically with a suicide was a fantastic plot twist. Frieren is a great teacher and had a great teacher.

The build-up to the final climax of this episode is simply outstanding. The flashback depicting how Frieren met her master and her tragic past establishes Frieren's character brilliantly. Words cannot describe how satisfied I feel with the execution of this episode. No fancy action animation is necessary for the final payoff of this arc. Simply beautiful!

Even though the result of the fight was obvious even before it started, the episode did an exceptional job of providing context and reinforcing that idea through the flashbacks with Flamme. Frieren spent almost all of her life perfecting permanent mana concealment in order to give her opponents a false sense of superiority. Meanwhile, demons like Aura are fundamentally unable to understand that concept because they have to showcase their mana to establish their social rank due to a lack of other means.

I find it fascinating how Flamme characterizes the demon's relationship with magic as “unparalleled love”. I can't exactly explain why, but it almost feels like she is humanizing them to a certain extent by simply stating that there is more to them than their killing instinct.

Furthermore, I think I had a misconception about Frieren's journey. The fact that she is keen to learn the flower spell at the end of Flamme's life already seems like a first sign of a deeper interest in humans. It wasn't entirely the hero's party that sparked this interest, although it certainly played a big role.

How Himmel was already aware of her immense power back when they first met, in combination with her absolutely enormous mana output in the showdown with Aura at the end, made for an incredible conclusion. This was the first time we've actually seen her true power, and it's simply very satisfying. I'm very excited about what this series will continue to have in store for us!

I feel that the flower bed spell scene not only indicated Frieren's initial interest in humans, but that recontextualizes the earlier episode where she was trying to find the blue moon weed, himmel's hometown flower for his statue. She's always had the spell since Flamme's time but she had really considered the implications/significance of the emotions that that would evoke until Himmel paved the way.

  Did we see any of that in episode 10's flashbacks, though? The only thing I can remember is that she was looking through some of Flamme's scrolls in one scene, but she didn't look particularly enthusiastic about it (not that that's saying much, we're talking about Frieren after all)

    I think Flamme said the first time she asked Frieren if she loved magic, Frieren confidently answered that she did
    But the time she asked after 50ish years, Frieren answered "yeah, I guess so"

    I guess it's more of something inferred, rather than actually show. We're being shown Frieren actively wanting to learn a spell that has nothing to do with the destruction of demons after she just stated she doesn't like magic like she used to before. Which is why I say it's an agreement with both your point and the one that I was making.

This episode really made me remember what happened with seven deadly sins and overlord.

Seven deadly sins with galand vs escanor, with galand dying by his own commandment was basically what happened with aura - they were both overconfident against their opponent that seemingly looked weak to them.

Overlord with the scene when ains takes his ring off to conceal his mana and shows just how large his mana pool really is. Concealing your strength leaves the opponent to assume things that are not true about you, you look weak and thus look easier to dispose of with less effort than usual. That in it of itself is a strategy to win against a cocky opponent.

Evan Call's music is truly magical and the animation, pacing, and overall direction of this episode really ties everything together into one wonderful piece of work. At this point, I already know the rest of this series is going to be just a beautiful journey to the end.

Finale yes, but that's practically a movie. For the seasonsals they did, it was riddled with slopCGI that looked terrible.

Oh yeah, as someone who's read the manga, it only gets better from here on out, with the exception of one mid arc.

Then I don't quite understand your original comment, though. How is the flower spell both the first instance of her desire to learn non-killing spells ("the beauty of magic") and the revitalization of her love for magic at the same time? In order for something to be revitalized, it has to have existed beforehand, doesn't it?

Probably just improper punctuation or I should have separated my sentences. The only thing I meant being revitalized was her love of magic, not her love of non-killing spells. It is the first time we see her attempting to learn a spell similar to the spells we see her love to find now.
