Holy shite, this was prolly one of the worst and most pointless episodes I've seen this year. Like what the fuck. xD I can feel the ratio coming.

  Hmm, all we got from the episode was a sequence of flashbacks, boring 4 minute talk with Yuki Tsukumo that somehow forced Geto to a conclusion that 'yeah, this is the way I will pursue now' and Gojo meeting Megumi. The whole Geto turning evil could have been longer, even a whole episode, coz in the end, why did he turn evil in the first place? All we know is he got depressed over curses tasting like vomit wiped towels.

    This entire episode highlights Getou's ideals and why he suddenly snapped based on what had happened to him previously:
    Eating curses disgusts him because of how horrendous they taste, but he put up with it because he initially believed that Jujutsu sorcerers were meant to protect non-sorcerers.
    Due to Gojo becoming the "strongest" he's been feeling more socially isolated. Both him and Gojo now go on missions alone now. Originally when they were together, Getou called themselves the "strongest" with Gojo but after the events with Riko he no longer sees himself as the strongest, and it's only Gojo. He realizes that his motivation is much weaker than Gojo after Toji beat both of them, but Gojo himself didn't give up.
    The Church followers cheer on as they celebrate the death of a girl they didn't even know, and Getou was really furious about it, but what stopped him from snapping at the time was his conflicting morals.
    After Yu Haibara dies, Getou falls even further. He realizes that there is not a great reward for being a jujutsu sorcerer because non-sorcerers will always be there to create curses for them to kill, and so genuine people like Haibara are just going to keep fighting until they inevitably die. Why do they protect humans from curses if they are the one's creating them?
    The last straw was when Getou witnessed the non-sorcerers at the village imprison two young girls and verbally berate them. Not only do regular humans create curses, but they aren't even aware of what is being done for them and how they are being protected, and they have no problem treating Jujutsu sorcerers awfully just because they are different from them. They even are fine with killing them.
    Getou also then realized what happened with Riko ended up happening for no reason, because Tengen ended up finding another vessel anyways.
    Also would like to point out he probably felt extreme despair when he was under the impression that Gojo died to Toji, and I imagine he never wants to feel that way ever again.

    Also worth to mention how he adopted Gojo's stance but doubled down on it (why do you need to protect the weak, etc etc) this whole strong/weak separation leads to seeing non-sorcerers as a different, inferior group and Geto increasingly started to despise them, seeing them as "Monkeys". That is both fueled that he is inherently different from them but also the things he sees/experiences which you point out, and the church follower cheer haunted him al the time, as the series showed. He was conflicted but the view of "they are monkeys which don't deserve to live" becomes increasingly stronger.

    That is all fine, I'm not complaining about the core premise of that story part. What I try to point out is that the message it was conveying felt rushed, unclear and just overall kinda boring, Geto getting upset and changing could have been an entire episode worth of content, but it also could be that manga was lacking in that aspect as well... I cannot tell since I haven't read it.

Incredible direction in this episode. Great sense of spacing/distance between Gojo and Geto showing how they grow apart and how they become lonelier, great usage of repetition and cuts to showcase Geto’s thinking process and how his ideology develops.

Generally it was quite immersive to watch and you even get Geto’s angle here and why he came to the conclusion he did. Also something which I didn’t notice last episode, but was brought up again in this episode - The post-credit scene in episode 4 was the turning point. Gojo used Geto as his moral compass and adopted his stance to not kill others meaninglessly, but Geto started to doubt his own views at this very moment.

And that showed in their final interaction when Geto became a criminal. Very well directed scene too by the way, I loved how the cars were used as transitions and how along with the sound it fueled the intensity, it also made the cut between Geto and Gojo a bit sharper, showcasing how their views clash.

The camera also kept zooming in, as in, that they became distant over time (and now once they talk to each other they are distant at first) and a proper understanding isn’t reached. Once the conversation progresses Geto’s mindset becomes clearer, however. But that’s also where Gojo realizes that Geto has truly developed the conviction to kill all the Jujutsu sorcerers. I also loved how the framing when Geto establishes his own organization stayed the same and cut-ins were used to explain the reaction.

I think there are more things to point out about the direction, but these stood out most to me. I think it’s really fucking good. AD work is stellar too this episode with Souta Yamazaki, Sayaka Koiso and Takuya Niinuma, a power combo which showed. The characters not only look great and I think this is the best the new designs looked so far, but they also nailed the expressions to translate Geto’s grief, his hollowness and building hatred and also Geto’s disbelief and desperation once he finds out what Geto did.

And we see our main cast again, which is nice. Overall, what an episode. What an episode. It becomes better to me the more I think and rewatch, but it was a great first experience too. I think Jujutsu Kaisen peaked for me today.

In the first episode of the season, after saving Utahime, Gojo teases her by saying "you cryin'?". Geto enters the conversation and his first line is "Satoru. It's not nice to pick on the weak." Meimei points out that Geto is the one teasing her without knowing it. This is a hint to Geto's character: someone who naturally dislikes the weak yet he cannot see this truth due to him following the obligations as a jujutsu sorcerer to protect the weak.
When they saved Utahime, Gojo forgot to put up a barrier. This leads to him being lectured by Yaga. After, Gojo asks if curtains are even necessary in the first place. Geto answers by saying "of course it matters. The prevention of cursed spirits is most important for the citizens' peace of mind. For that reason, keeping it confidential is important. Not only that-" and then he is cut off by Gojo. This shows that Geto is by the book and that they have already had this conversation before as Gojo cuts him off as if he already knows what Geto is about to say. This establishes that Geto is the level-headed and ethically just counterpart to Gojo, who is reckless and selfish.
While protecting Riko, Gojo wasn't as strong as he is now. He hadn't learned the reverse cursed technique, keeping his infinity active at all times would strain his body, and he couldn't use red or purple. When Geto realized Gojo hadn't slept for 3 days, Gojo said "I'm good, man. Besides, you're here too" and this makes it obvious that he felt safe with Geto. Gojo often fought with Geto, trying to assert his dominance, but Geto did the exact same. They used to be the strongest duo together.
The assassination of Riko made both of them emotionally distraught. After Gojo kills Toji and carries Riko's corpse out of the chamber, Gojo asks "Should we kill these guys? If we do it now I probably won't feel a single thing". To which Geto responds by saying "Nah. There's no meaning to doing that." Gojo then responds by saying " Meaning... Is that really necessary?" Geto answers "Yes, it's very important. Especially for sorcerers." At this moment, Geto is able to maintain his composure and convinces Gojo to not massacre these cult members for no reason. By doing this, Geto truly shows the extreme to which he would go to follow his duty as a jujutsu sorcerer.
As the morally ethically just side of Geto is extreme in the way that he follows his duties is one side of Geto. The other side is also one that Geto followed to an extreme.
Toji gave Gojo his blessing (Megumi in japanese means blessing) and gave Geto his curse (the curse Toji used to store his items) not only physically but also mentally. Gojo became stronger thanks to Toji while Geto could only watch Gojo becoming stronger and more distant because of Toji.
Gojo becoming stronger separated them and made both of them lonely. By seeing Gojo as "the strongest" instead of them both being "the strongest", Geto falls into isolation and although Gojo doesn't show it as much, he also fell into isolation. Geto now no longer has a friend who's there to stop his downward spiral.
Seeing the cult members mindlessly clap over his friend's death at Geto's highest point of grief took a big part in Geto's coming to his realization. After being traumatized by the claps of the cult members, Geto is at his limit. He asks himself "For who?". He wonders for who he is suffering. Geto says "Ever since that day... I've kept asking myself. What I saw then wasn't unusual at all. I was well aware of that ugliness. I already knew that and I made the decision to be a sorcerer despite it. As one who is strong, you must fulfill your obligation". After being reminded of the clapping, he finally breaks by saying "You fucking monkeys".
When his best friend betrayed him, Gojo felt insecure and lonely and he realized it wasn't enough for him to be strong, he needed strong allies to back him up, which is why he became a teacher.
Haibara's death deeply affects him because we could see that he acted as one of Geto's emotional pillars. Geto doesn't want to see any more of his friends dying, which is the main reason for him killing all non-sorcerers. He doesn't want to see his friends die for the sake of the same people who mocked his friend's death. In jujutsu kaisen 0, Geto still sees all the sorcerers as his friends
I could also talk about Yuki accepting Geto's plan and in a way encouraging him by saying that it's the easiest way to achieve her dream even though what he needed most was somebody stopping him, Geto deciding to finally take action after seeing two young girls tortured by the village and many others but I don't want to repeat too much of what others have already said
