Anime & Manga Recommendation are now live!
- Suggest similar anime or manga by clicking the + in the recommendations section of the anime or manga pages.
- Up vote good recommendations and down vote poor recommendations. Highly rated recommendations will rise to the top while negatively rated recommendations will start to disappear.
- This is the most basic form of recommendations so expected it to be expanded upon with new features and adjustments over time.
- We've automatically generated a number of recommendations based off of tags but we'll be depending on the user base to really fill them out and provide more high quality recommendations.
A number of restrictions have been placed on recommendation to ensure they remain relevant and useful:
- Anime cannot be recommended to Manga and viceversa
- Light novels can only be recommended to other light novels
- Music videos can only be recommended to other music videos
- Direct relations (e.g. sequel and prequel) anime/manga cannot be recommended to each other
- Cannot recommend not yet released anime/manga
- Some anime or manga may be blocked from recommendations at moderator's discretion
- Adult (H) anime/manga can only be recommended to other Adult anime/manga
Note: This feature is not be confused with personal recommendations which will give you automatic recommendations based on your list scores. That is planned for another time.
Edit - Patch:
- Fixed recommendation search results being sorted incorrectly
- You can now enter an anime/manga ID into the recommendation search input
- Made recommendation search respond quicker to input

Changelog - 09/11/2019 - Subscribe to the forum thread for automatic notifications.

We've changed the way activity notifications work! You can now subscribe and unsubscribe to any activity by clicking the Bell icon. By default you'll also be automatically subscribed to all activity you create or reply to.

Some Notifications settings have been changed to Activity Subscription settings to go along with this change:
- "Notify me when someone replies to my activity" is now "Automatically subscribe me to activity I create"
- "Notify me when someone replies to activity I previously replied to" is now "Automatically subscribe me to activity I reply to"

(BETA) You can now send private messages to other users. This works just like sending messages currently but only you, the recipient, and community moderators will be able to see and reply to them.

- We want to ensure this feature is working as intended so it will be in a beta state for at least a few weeks. As with all our beta features, only donators will be able to use them during this time. While only donators can send private messages, all users can still view and reply to private messages sent to them.
- All site rules will still apply to private messages.

Added "Follows You" badge to the profile of users that follow you.
Improved performance on pages with activity, threads, or comments with a high number of likes.
You can now view a list of all the users you currently have blocked in settings->account.
Added unfollow buttons in the following section of users profile.
Fixed edge cases where users could reply to or send notifications to users they were blocked by.
Community moderators may now send messages via the ModChan account, instead of using their personal accounts.
Moved some of the button icons in top right of activity cards into a dropdown menu.

New Tags:

Denpa (Works that feature familiar characters acting in unfamiliar, yet seemingly orchestrated ways. Common iconography would include telephone poles and wires, building roof tops, suicides, disorientation, and paranoia.)
Medicine (Centered around the activities of people working in the field of medicine.)
Dullahan (Prominently features a character who is a Dullahan, a creature from Irish Folklore with a head that can be detached from its main body)
Cheerleading (Centers around the activity of cheerleading.)

Patch (Refresh if you're still having issues with these)
- Fixed direct links to private messages will currently result in a 404
- Fixed like (heart) button does not display on activity replies

Changelog - 09/04/2021 - Subscribe to the forum thread for automatic notifications.

To keep accounts more secure users logging in from a new location will now need to verify the login via email. (Make sure the email on your anilist account is accurate and up to date!)
Fixed bug that sometimes stopped airing anime episode notifications being sent.
Fixed bug that sometimes stopped tweets from being sent.

Note: The following changes are not yet available via submissions, they are only currently available to edit/add by site moderators.

We hope to make these new additions available to all users via submissions soon, once we've decided how to handle the new data and have updated the submission guidelines accordingly.

Staff:

- New fields: date of birth, date of death, occupations, gender, years active, home town, middle name
- Notes can now be added to character/voice actor roles. E.g. "Child voice"
- Character/voice actor roles can now be assigned a "Dubbing group" to separate them from other dubs in the same language. For example Neon genesis evangelion will have a separate dubbing group for Netflix.
- Staff roles on anime/manga pages are now displayed in a consistent and sane order
- Additional languages

Characters

- New fields: Date of birth, age, gender, spoiler names, middle name
- Characters can now have media specific names

New tags added:

Cannibalism (Prominently features the act of consuming another member of the same species as food.)

New adult (18+) tags added:

Exhibitionism (Features the act of exposing oneself in public for sexual pleasure.)

Anime Acceptance Criteria Changes

Recaps - The guidelines for recaps have been clarified to only consider a format change from Movie to TV/OVA/ONA.
Recuts - This is a new section to apply to entries that have modified or added content to an existing entry on the site and how they will be handled on AniList. For details refer to this thread

- This update had a bug that stopped the Delete button displaying on messages on your user profiles. This has now been fixed.
Missed changes
- Users can now set their "Activity merge time". This option controls how episode and chapter activity get merged together. You can find the option in Settings->Anime/Manga (This has been live for a few weeks but missed its own changelog, apologies!)
- You can now view today's staff and character's birthdays on their search pages. Staff Characters

Changelog - 02/9/2021 - Subscribe to the forum thread for automatic notifications.

We’ve added new notifications for when changes happen to anime or manga on your lists. A reason will be provided in the notification text as to why the changes were made. The new notifications are:

- When an anime or manga in your list has its data changed in a significant way.
- When an anime or manga on your list is merged with another anime or manga.
- When an anime or manga on your list has been deleted from the site.

New setting options have been added to disable the above notifications in Settings->Notifications. Additionally an option has been added to disable the “New related anime/manga added to site” notification, which previously didn’t have an option to be disabled. (Note these new options may not appear for all users immediately)
New source types have been added for anime and manga: Web novel, Live action, Multimedia project, Comic, Game, Picture book.
A doujin filter has been added to anime and manga browse page. It can be found in the additional filters dropdown on the top right of the page.
Submissions may now be temporarily closed to help us keep the backlog of submissions at a maintainable amount.
Added initial automated measures against favorite count and anime/manga score manipulation. As a result some scores or counts may have bigger changes over the coming days.
Fixed an issue where activity or other text inputs would be rejected if only containing non-alphanumeric characters (e.g. Japanese characters)
Fixed a visual issue where mod badges would sometimes overlap with other badges and usernames on the mobile user profile.
Fixed a visual issue where the cover image on anime and mange pages would sometimes overlap the sidebar just under it.
Fixed an issue where the score distribution graph on anime and manga pages would sometimes get stuck and not update when going from one anime/manga page to another.
Added randomanga to [apps page](/apps).

New tags:

Monster Boy (Prominently features a male character who is a part-monster.)
Sumo (Centers around the sport of sumo.)
Religion (Centers in the belief that humanity is related to supernatural, transcendental, and spiritual elements.)
Judo (Centers around the sport of judo.)
Torture (The act of deliberately inflicting severe pain or suffering upon another individual or oneself as a punishment or with a specific purpose.)

Tag changes:

Changelog - 07/12/2021 - Subscribe to the forum thread for automatic notifications.

Tag descriptions are now shown when adding new tags to an anime or manga.
External links and tags are now displayed on mobile anime and manga pages.
Fixed issue where linking to anime or manga sub pages would sometimes go to the wrong page view.
Fixed more issues where some text characters would not be counted towards required minimum character counts.

Forum comment chains can now be locked by moderators.

New submission manual:

We've recently made many changes to the submission manual. They consist of new functions on the site, modifications of current guidelines, elaborations on existing guidelines, and minor corrections and clarifications. While not every change is mentioned in this list we felt it would be best to attempt to call attention to specific sections that have seen larger amounts of changes. As normal please try and read through the submission manual in full before making submissions and please let us know if there are any ways we could improve or clear things up further.

- We have modified the hosting location of the manual! All links found on the site should redirect appropriately but please clean out any bookmarks or shortcuts you may have been using.
- We have outlined the guidelines for the new fields found on character and staff pages. These include Gender, Age, Blood Type, and Date of Birth for characters and Primary Occupation, Date of Birth, Date of Death, Years Active, Gender, Hometown, and Blood Type for staff.
- We have added a section that attempts to provide general definitions for the various genre's found on the site as well as definitions for how the various demographic tags should be applied on the site. (Still a bit of a work in progress)
- We have added information about the various newly added notification types we have pertaining to the management of data on the site.
- We now apply the "Doujin" classification to various anime titles on the site.
- For all written media, series with no visible numerical count will be separated.

Changelog - 13/01/2022 - Subscribe to the forum thread for automatic notifications.

Hovering over the airing episode countdown in the anime page sidebar will now display the time and date the episode airs in your timezone.
A new “Unhide List Entries” button has been added to list settings. This allows you to unhide any anime or manga list entries you had selected "hide from status lists" on while having no custom lists associated with it.
Added media filter to notifications feed.
Improved notification feed loading times.
Fix some more issues where certain characters weren’t counted towards required review length.
Fixed incorrect character & staff birthdays being displayed.
Fixed incorrect year sometimes being displayed on browse anime cards.
Fixed tags and external links sometimes displaying twice on anime/manga pages.
Improvements to user submission cards.
Adjusted forum comment spacing.

Upcoming server enhancements

You may have noticed last Sunday we suffered some down time and reduced site performance due to the high demand of users visiting the site and updating their list for the new episodes of Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer. API access was also temporarily disabled to ensure better site stability during this time, stopping many users from using apps to interact with their AniList account and lists.

We’re really sorry for the downtime and other issues caused and are currently hard at work setting up new server infrastructure to handle this ever increasing demand. New server infrastructure will take a number of weeks to set up and deploy however, so we’ve made some other temporary optimisations to the site to try and hold us over until then. As a result you may notice some statistical data update less frequently than before and some inaccurate page counts.

More servers aren’t cheap so if you’d like to help us continue to grow please do consider donating and a huge thanks to those that do and already have.

In the past month we also clarified how we modify various anime titles on the site, the details can be found in the submission manual. The changes should more accurately reflect how we were modifying names and should not warrant any further mass updates.

Due to feedback we recieved we are making minor modifications to the rules that we had rolled out about 3 weeks ago.

Mature Content

- The following rule was modified from "NSFW images should not contain real graphic violence or explicit nudity of any kind." to "NSFW images are considered NSFW if they contain real graphic violence or explicit nudity of any kind."

User behaviour

- The following rule was modified from "Offensive user names, bios, avatars, and banners will be removed." to "Offensive user names, bios, avatars, and banners will be removed. This typically is just an extension of our current rules against various forms of bigotry."

Spam

- The following rule was modified from "Posts made to be excessively long" to "Posts made to be excessively long by including purposeless content or padding."
- The following rule was modified from "Repeated posts of the same or similar message (this can be from one or multiple users all sending a single message each)." to "Repeated posts of the same or similar message with little value or the intent to annoy (this can be from one or multiple users all sending a single message each)."

General

- The following rule was added "Claiming other people's work as your own is not allowed. This may include, but is not limited to, art, videos, and posts."

Forum Guidelines

- The following rule was modified from "Duplicate topics will be removed or merged with an already existing thread – use the search function before posting." to "Duplicate topics will be removed or merged with an already existing thread – use the search function before posting, and if a thread about your topic exists, please post in the existing thread instead of making a new one."
- The following rule was modified from "Please do not intentionally leave comments in otherwise inactive threads for the intention of reviving those threads, otherwise known as “necroing”." to "Likewise, do not post in an existing thread solely for the intention of reviving it, otherwise known as “necroing”. Posting in inactive threads is allowed, so long as it adds meaningful discourse and continues the discussion."

Reviews

- The following rule has had an exception added to it, "The review should be a review of that specific work and not for other related works." was modified to include the following: "An exception can be made if its for a work that is released in a split cour schedule or some other delayed release."
