I've heard a lot of people ragging on how episode and I don't really get why.
The main complaint I've seen is that the storylines feel unfinished, but that sort of fits the vibe of the story. Elaina is a traveler, not a problem solver. It makes sense (at least to me) that she doesn't see something through to the very end because that's not her goal in life. It kind of gets you into Elaina's shoes, seeing the start to important moments in other's lives but not the result. It adds a sort of fantastical whimsy to the tales as you can only imagine what happened after Elaina left.
I also feel the open-ended ending (redundant, I know) adds to the eeriness of the stories. Rather than giving you a definite result, it gives you a depressing concept to mull over on your own, which works well for the kinds of stories that were being told.
Of course, this is all my humble opinion. There are definitely some flaws that can be seen in this manner of story telling, but I feel it adds more ups for the anime than it does downs. I'd honestly be happy to see the show continue down this sort of depressing, open-ended tales route as Elaina experiences the darker truths of the world.
