Hwang Mi-Na is a female Korean comic artist, who started her career in 1980 with 'The Blue Star of Ionie', published in Sonyeo Sidae. She contributed to the expansion of female comics in Korea with several comics about romances. She founded Nine magazine in 1985, a literary comics magazine. Unlike other female artists, Hwang Mi-na used Korea itself as the setting of her stories.
She is also referred to as "순정 만화 계의 대모" which vaguely translates to the Godmother of Romance Manhwa (shoujo manga).
In 1981, she received a letter from a fan that said "I want to draw manhwa, but I don't know how." The two exchanged letters several times, and one day the fan sent a manuscript, which Hwang Mi-Na immediately showed to her publisher. The fan was invited to study with Hwang Mi-Na, staying over at her house to work on manuscripts.The aspiring manhwaga was none other than Kim Hye-Rin, who shot to fame with her debut work "Star of the North Sea".
