~_One Piece: A quick review_~

One piece is one of those shows that many watchers or readers tend to skip because of its length. While I was once one of those watchers, I took on the challenge of catching up to One Piece. While it wasn't exactly an easy thing, I did have a lot of fun going on this adventure with Luffy and his crew.

~_Character Writing is top of the line_~

One of the many things about One Piece that makes it part of the big 3 is the character writing. Originally throughout the first half of the story, you would assume there is very little character development or story to tell. However, after a certain point you quickly realize how each of Luffy's crew members and himself evolve over time and I am still learning more about them each and every episode that goes by. The characters are not overshadowed by other things in the world, they help drive the narrative and scene forward through every piece of dialogue and every fight they encounter. Not to mention the comedic timing and chemistry many of the characters have as pairs or in a big group. Very few shows can accomplish such a hard task, but my boy Oda did it.

~_World Building_~

One of the things I admire about One Piece is the world building. The world in the beginning is made to be at first, very small. However, after the first arc, East Blue, you finally get more knowledge of the whos and whats in the world Oda has created. One of the most fascinating things about the world of One Piece is simply the history and the world government. While the OG Pirate King, Gold D. Roger is a huge part of this history, it isn't as widely known till later in the story. Most of everything in the world of One Piece is all connected in one way or another. However, one of the biggest things about the world building is the immersion I experienced when going through the show the first and only time. I felt like I was on the adventure with the crew and watching them from the sidelines as they battled their way to the top. The comedic moments also hit during break arcs where there was more lighthearted storytelling and managed to get a pretty good laugh out of me.

~_The Music_~

Listen, I have listened to many anime OSTs in recent years, but oh my god does One Piece hit a different level. Each character has their own theme, each instance is given its own music (even if reused) and still is made to sound incredible. Overtaken is one of those songs that hits so hard in every walk to, or a surge of power coming through for the straw hats to fight, it all creates the tone of "you fucked up". Each character theme is memorable and tailors in when it sees fit in fights primarily or witty shit talking to the villain. One of my favorite themes aside from overtaken, is simply Gear Four's theme. That theme hits different and makes Gear Four's entrance in any major fight that more menacing. When that theme begins to play Luffy says "Gear Fourth!" you know shit is about to go down and how bad of a day that villain is about to have.

~_Story_~

Without talking about spoilers, One Piece's story is primarily focused on a legend that the main characters all help drive forward. One Piece's first lines of dialogue don't disappoint. They set the stage for what the main premise of the show is. "Who will be the next pirate king? What is the One Piece? Who will find the One Piece?" are all questions that are still yet to be answered. While that is the main story, there is other stories branching off of the first one that still tie into the main storyline. From the secrets of the World Government to the Revolutionary Army it is no wonder that One Piece's story is so complex, yet intriguing.

_Bottom Line_

One Piece is a show that doesn't take itself lightly. From simple beginnings to many advance powers and story telling later on, I highly recommend this to anyone. There is a reason One Piece is called Peak Fiction, and I urge you to go on the journey I also did. You won't regret it.
