You might be right on that theory, I am inclined to believe it is actually ancient but maybe it is a recent spirit.

There's a whole lot going on here, and that royal family seems to be at the centre of it all. Hard to tell how much, because it runs so deep and they're so used to the misdirection to keep others from noticing, but I wouldn't be surprised if you're (OP) right about the mermaid spirit being the "divorced" wife.
