[Spoilers] My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 - Episode 5 Discussion

The next episode will have one of the best scenes in the entire manga. So hope they nail it. If these past 5 episodes are anything to go by, they totally will

I don’t think Marin has gushed like that about Gojo since season one when she ate with him and his grandpa.

Welp, next time im at a con i'm gonna have to see if I can find a key-chain or sticker of puppet Marin in artist alley.

i've been sewing since i was 10 and recently graduated in fashion design, and out of every show or game i've seen (not just anime but western shows too), dress up darling is the only one that actually shows the process and art of crafting clothing and in such a beautiful way too when everything else is just "fabric + me = dress"

like the entire sequence of gojo drafting and cutting patterns made me so unbelievably proud and seen and i have never seen that in a show before, it's always only (a very bad depiction of) the sewing when pattern drafting is the most important part

i hope ppl watch this show for how they treat the arts and not the fan service bc this made me so happy

Did this episode have a different director? The vibe felt completely different from prior episodes.. In a good way! Definitely enjoyed this one a lot.

The first half was hilarious with the comedy suspense in it. Such a great episode

My god, Marin teasing Gojo as a host... Daaaamn, I lost it.

And also, the way the awful cook trope was used was perfect. It was a good balance of realistic and over the top. Poor Gojo.

the slow pacing in the second half was so well done

The way this season has been directed for the pacing and animation wise is actually amazing. They seem to be going all out for this season

I love how Kitagawa understands their roles, he's the artist and she's the medium so she'll accept anything he wants to perfect his piece.

This episode is really one of those where you can tell the studio was having fun with it. The animation and directing feels surprisingly better than S1 which is saying something considering it was already stellar. Like it really feels like each episode was split from a movie budget adaptation.

It was so sweet to see Marin working so hard to help Wakana! The cosplay is already perfect in my opinion, but Wakana is a perfectionist, so there can't be even the slightest flaw. The huge help the whole class is giving is proving to be invaluable!

ahh this whole episode was great! loved the Let's Learn Things puppets, was totally unexpected. also loved Marin pulling the host act on Gojo:

wow, what a special episode! especially the bento half, but the scenes were pretty dynamic and interesting throughout the whole episode. great direction.

I feel like this episode must have had a different director. The number of zooms and pans in the camerawork was... nonstop. I was so distracted this whole episode.

i LOVED the bit at the beginning with the puppets, one of the directors for bocchi the rock directed this episode, and i can see that with the puppet scene. the marin puppet was so cute.

Honestly my favorite part of the episode is marin cooking food for gojo. One of the very annoying tropes i hate as an anime fan is the trope where one person can cook VERY WELL and the otherone is so bad that they make literal poison. if it happened only every so often, i wouldn't be as annoyed, but this trope is SO OVERDONE and for a SOL show i'm not a big fan of it.

sometimes it DOES make sense, since not everyone knows how to cook and the ways they mess up are realistic in that they either burn it to a crisp or it's undercooked, but then there's moments where you just wonder how the FUCK they were able to survive because the food they make is literal fucking poison.

They handle this very well in this anime, Marin CAN cook, since she lives on her own she DEFINITELY needed to learn to cook in order to make sure she can afford as much shizuku merch as possible and not have to spend a lot on take out. her flaw is that she cooks VERY UNHEALTHY FOOD with HUGE PORTION SIZES, meanwhile gojo is a lot more sensible and makes healthier food with smaller poriton sizes.

This is something i wish more anime would show off, because the way a character cooks really shows off their personality and their habits more than just "i make literal poison". like, it makes sense yor from spy x family makes literal poison since she's an assassin, but you can see the difference in how marin cooks vs gojo since gojo lives with his grandpa, who not only probably taught him to cook but he also probably needs to make food that's easy for someone his grandpa's age to digest. Marin living on her own and having a high metabolism means she cooks bigger portions. I'm actually impressed marin was able to make that one onigiri wrapped in meat because that shit is NOT EASY.

This is also very realistic as someone who DOES know how to cook, since I often found that in my earlier years and even today, i make more food than is necessary for the day because i grew up with such a high metabolism. Marin definitely cooks food like a filipino mom, if she ever has a family with gojo, "going hungry" is NOT going to be a problem for them.

as for the rest of the episode, Marin wanting to improve more as cosplayer by trying to sew a button is so cute, and the latter half where gojo explains marin has to work on her poses to act more "manly" is very cool to see, marin's going through the mulan training. i wasn't ready for ikemen marin tho, gojo was very much in fight or flight mode.

as for the suit, marin is KILLING IT in the suit, once again, gojo is flexing with his ability to cook (both figuretively and literally), and I like how with every cosplay he makes, there's something that needs to be changed due to things they didn't account for, the suit being slightly off thanks to marin wearing the binder is very much how that would go down.

overall, very good episode, and i'm so HYPED to see the whole cosplay finished.
