Looks like Halkenburg's plan is complete self-sacrifice. Kill his brother Benjamin in exchange for his own life. I doubt he thinks that way, but we have no idea what Benjamin's guardian beast can do and Halkenburg's body looks to be beyond repair.

Coins need to be spent, so I wonder if there's an affect gained by allowing the number to build up, but then put back into the beast like a vending machine.
