Anyone got any context on what's going on with the production side of this manga, or what the author is trying to do?

Just like Shinyyyjoke said, he is known for these sudden pulls. I do not want to be harsh, but the writing here was absolutely garbage. Relying on cheap shock elements like this is not the way to write a story. No build-up, no hints, absolutely nothing. He also for some reason hates childhood friend characters, too. I dropped it immediately, but I'll read the next chapter just to see how he tries to salvage this situation.
