The Manga isn't finished and is still ongoing. Currently on chapter 1462, Which is waaaay ahead of the anime.
The anime in my opinion is "better" just because of the soundtrack and old school animation. It has 3 seasons and you would have to pick up the manga after that.
Start with the Anime move onto the manga.
The problem with Ippo's anime is the animation, in the first Madhouse series in 2003 you can see the presence of repeated frames and camera movements that try to simulate the action, the director thanks to the different perspectives managed to give more frenzy and tension to the action; All this becomes worse with the later series, there is an awkward static ( at the levels of Ao ashi or Ahiru no Sora maybe), it manages to compensate with the characters and the plot, but in my opinion, there is a limit to how much you can take, but that will depend on you. The Manga although it can be scary because of the number of chapters, but you read them quickly, and without realizing it you end up catching up, this is due to the way George Morikawa tells his characters and the story in a realistic and never predictable way. The drawings were already very good when he started, but as time went on he managed to improve them further, making them cleaner and making certain panels breathtaking. Finally, by adaptation, the anime does not differ much from the manga, although it is obvious that it omits details that can enhance the characters' background and the storyline of the fights more.

the music, the 90's animation, good old anime sports shots, it all comes alive in the animation. The early manga's not bad, but the art is still a bit rough, and some character designs definitely got updated as the art got better, and the anime had the fixes. Like Mashiba manga early face design is unrecognizable to how he looks now.
Just be ready to never skip the intro and listen to it fully each time because its so good.

@realMadness No physicals yet, but official translation started September 2023. They released the first 87 chapters as a batch (up to the end of Rookie King Tournament) and now release 1 a week, which is kind of crazy when you consider this series has 1511 chapters and counting. I thought at least a double release a week, but oh well. At least we have official translations at all now. Kodansha are the ones publishing and they have slowly been moving digital titles over to physical print, so I'd say it is only a matter of time. We finally have Initial D in print and I never thought that would happen. This is one of the most popular sports manga ever and I feel like Kodansha isn't going to just let it sit in digital jail for forever. Hopefully...
