Damn this was one of the best episodes this season.
The song choice at the end was questionable though.
It'd be interesting to see what happens in the next 6 episodes because production after this episode is really bad.

nah the song choice at the end with itadori's face was really terrifying and suited the situation. but yeah best episode , insane fights and as suaul domain expansion was top of the world , but showing nanmi half burned at the end was sad and satisfying at the same time to see he was alive
It sounded goofy to me but I respect your opinion.
Maybe I should watch the episode one more time.
thought i was the only one that didnt like the op being played at the end
Okay so can I get spoiler free explanation of Sukuna's powers? Especially the fire arrow. And that beast that Megumi summoned from his 10 shadow technique.
if manga readers could explain, we would. we still don't know lmao (when it comes to the fire arrow). Mahoraga basically can find a way to avoid/counter any technique/attack used on it.
not find it's literal adaption , after he adapts to a technique it barely affects him afterward
In this episode? Basically dimantle is a cut which "cuts" people with no curse energy
and cleave is a cut that "cuts" people with curse energy.
Mahoraga was adjusting itself to those 2 but Sukuna used both simultaneously to defeat him before he adjusted.
Edit: He used Cleave after he adjusted to dismantle If I am not wrong
As for the fire arrow, its a + so far id say.(Hasnt been explained but I havent read after shibuya sooo)
I don't know if I just looked harder because of the recent news or if its really true but certain scenes looked very unfinished or at least not as detailed as you would expect them to be. Like they had to be drawn with extremely limited time.
Other scenes looked great though which makes the low quality scenes even more jarring.
I hope the show might get a break but I highly doubt it. Mappa really needs to rethink their approach on production.
I wish the best to all the overworked animators.
Episode was storywise great I just feel like JJK deserves better.

Animation was pretty good considering the production issues.
The quality this season is very inconsistent throughout, just like every mappa anime these days.
I remember watching the first episode of S2 and was creaming my pants after seeing the animation and the new artstyle and direction.
Things went downhill as episodes passed by and here we are.(don't get me wrong the fights look very good, but the quality is very inconsistent overall compared to S1)
I really hope mappa doesn't fumble anymore after this.
A bit sloppier than the previous episode (Less clarity, backgrounds and such), but what more can I ask for? MAPPA is already working their animators to the bone. Still, an excellent episode that satisfied me. I can definitely see how Mahoraga can be an issue for even the likes of Gojo and Sukuna. The dude has so many tools and regenerates like Wolverine.
The music choice was great, totally fit the fight. Nanami doing his best Two-Face impression :'(
JJK ep17 feel like i should just break my monitor. MAPPA's bullshit amateur animation. freaking irritating. i sympathize with the animators through
First noticeable thing was this a epi has no op and ed which surprising as it a MAPPA's work. In my opinion the first half of the epi is a finished or polished but second half to me little unpolished or i say garbage. Shot to shot transition was difficult to focus even when I read manga I can easily keep track what is happening, its literally way way better and the last song really unnecessary totally ruin the pressure and moment.
Again, in the starting of this arc they were using lite strokes but ultimately when MAPPA's ass on the stove they go 4 a safe call. why are u guys have no shame. I have no problem with lite stroke, but at least stick with what u started.

The artstyle change is just because the episode directors are given liberty to do what they want. The next episodes will most likely have a different artstyle than this episode. The key animation is incredible tho
~~~
"Only I should die"
Man The anime adapt for JJK even with all those "hurdles" goes waaaay beyond the manga counter parts...
Probably one of the better looking episodes so far considering how much of a spectacle Sukuna vs Mahoraga was and these backgrounds were nothing short of great.~~~
~~
~~~
~~~~Subjectively I wont nitpick since my probs with this episode are the same as those which I have with JJK in general but the action was one of the best I have seen. Though while the animation is fluid, it is a bit out of proportion but considering the situation, I dont think we can really complain~~Also we all know whats coming after this~
Holy mother of god, what did i just witness???? MAPPA COOKED the team with awful planning and rushed schedules yet the team still delivered such an amazing episode that i cannot help but be pissed at how it could've looked so much more better and polished. The base ideas were even conveyed to a noob like me.
They made me genuinely excited watching what was in the manga one of my least liked fights. IMO that's a win.
#I better not see any of you mfs complaining about animation in this ep!!!!!!!!!
#This shit was straight-up phenomenal
~~~
I haven't seen the ep yet, but oh my god that is insane stuff wtf
for real real
one of THE BEST anime episodes i have seen in a long time, and what makes this a more extreme feat is that the animation team were capable of doing this despite their hellish working conditions, props to them and i pray that they'll have a break after this episode and sort out the scheduling issues. we're reaching the finale of the arc and it only gets better from here, but only if the animation team have the proper time that they so deservedly need
Although it was a bit rough in some areas, the animation itself is actual perfection. It's crazy how many big animators worked on this and the fact they did it in such a short time is mindblowing

I'm very concerned for the next episodes because of how ass the production is. If only toho, shueisha and mappa decided it might be a good idea to delay the rest of the season. I hope they take a break and give the best fight of the entire series the quality it deserves
MAPPA animators after working for 18 hours straight.
How they can still produce high quality episodes every week despite the terrible working conditions is beyond me, massive respect to them
Got a bad bad feeling about Nanami....
They are talented asf. Imagine what they will be able to do if their work conditions were good.
The new art syle is not good!
The artstyle was never good. S1 had the characters moving like jello and refused to confirm to actual shape. Looked like ass then and now.
bruh
Awesome episode overall, but them playing that song during Yuujis breakdown really took me out of the moment.
Fucking phenomenal, mappa cooked the best fucking delicacy
Cinema.
shigemo going 'i escaped death again!' and then his face sliding off is going in the reaction video box. tfw when u finish ur essay at the tenth hour and then realise u missed a part of the question
OH MY FUUUUUUUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD
it's my personal favourite episode from the series to be honest.... dang this whole fight looked so beautiful <3333 no, but just watching it and not thinking about anything... so good!!!!!!!!!!
Mappa do a fucking lot for us and they cooked this amazing episode in my birthday, can't be more happy <33333
daddy Mahoraga slay! :D
oh and two most important things:
1) Nanamin..................... and I know what happened in next episode......
2) Yuji scene by Enoki Junya................................... I don't like the op song there, but whatever... Enoki-san did soo fucking good, but without this loud music it could be even more sad, but I'm glad, I watched him recording this in studio and giving so much emotions into this... tbh I thought this scene give me heartbroken, crying and more, but ye still it's precious for me

12/10
oh, happy belated birthday!
thank you Kaito <3
I thought it sounded better in this episode than when they played the ed in the last one. But I can understand why you don't like it.
yeah tbh I don't like the op at all. They should've played some CSM-like tunes during the Itadori scene. But okay, the song does sound a little wicked and chaotic, which sits well with the maelstrom that Sukuna just whipped up outta thin air and Itadori's feelings.
it definitely felt like a terrible choice to me. They should've played a song to let the feeling of sombre sink in, for example that Toji's eerie theme song would fit here
yep, in the manga he explained it as switching between the 2 attacks faster than maho could adapt to it
Fire arrow power is still unexplained in the manga.
The beast that Megumi summoned is named Mahoraga. It's his last and the most powerful shadow, which can basically adapt to any attack(if given some time) and heal itself. The wheel on mahoraga determines how much time will it take to adapt to the power.
Basically Sukuna's main attack, dismantle, cuts enemies and his secondary attack, cleave, is a big slash that is used to cut the enemy in one fell swoop. We don't know what Sukuna's fire arrow is but it's most likely something to do with his "true sorcery" he talks about.
Mahoraga has the ability to adapt to any and all phenomena. When Sukuna used his domain, he used cleave on Mahoraga. Mahoraga proved that he didn't adapt to dismantle but to slashing attacks in general, which is why Sukuna had to switch to a different type of attack to finish him off
Sukuna is basically Gordon ramsay, his powers are like cooking I mean just think about it, he slices his opponents, then minces them and then proceeds to grill them
So I like to think of him as a cook
LOL
agreed and even his domain is call malevolent kitchen
Overall the animation was quite good, its just certain scenes that really stick out. And it feels like those scenes become more and more the deeper we get into the season. Still, even for the "quite good" parts I somehow would expect more from such a flagship anime like JJK.
I hope they somewhat get to fix it up in the BluRay release like they did with AoT. Although I have no idea how they would do that given this means even more extra work.
Also hope this doesn't set a weird precedent and anime will soon get patched up after release like games are.
I still enjoy the show but I don't know how to feel about it overall...
Episode was seriously mind blowing with this animation i hope the problem will solve of animators and other things
Some fans are on some serious amount of copium.

Its not even that the episode particularly sucked, but I will forever wonder how good S2 could have been if the animators had a sensible time frame to do their work.
Just compare this episode to episode 1 and tell me you don't notice the enormous drop in quality and it can only get worse from here on out.
JJK, the team and the fans deserve better.
sucks to be you I've been loving the season 2 animation
I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it.
I'm just saying it had potential to be so much better if the animators were given time and didn't have to work under such horrendous conditions.
It's literally the Key Frame Animation Director of the episode in the screenshot above saying they were only able to do 30% of what they wanted to do because of time constraints.
I am criticizing Mappa more than the actual episode.
they're most likely exaggerating that 30%, you're telling me it looks almost as good as earlier in the season and that was only 30% of it? Nah I call cap, the entire fight in that episode looked phenomenal and I don't think 30% is really accurate
you are in heavy copium if you think it was as good as earlier episodes, only episode that was in the level of gojo geto past arc was the yuji vs chuso fight, other eps already felt rushed and not as good but the past 2 episodes felt it wasnt even complete and they joined whatever was animated and called it a day
pls touch grass
@ashuh Quite a line.
Bro u r too naive. Anyway first understood the topic then think. Actually no, for u then process what u read and only if u catch the meaning, then use ur charming lines.
Like water, earth, cable touch, right? I think this also ur catch lines in future.
However, i know u r in that age. But think think think. That my humble request. Don't mind it's might be hard but be understand. Plz be dont exaggerate.
Bruh you are just embarrassing yourself here
lol bruh who r u?
Brother just take a hint... (This is a prime example of how twitter threads are formed) but more appropriately just reread your responses. You would see where you "slipped" or why this is an embarressing ordeal...
At least thats how it appears to an outside observor.
Bruh i really don't ( ^-^)ノ∠※。.:*:・'°☆
I really liked to talk to u. That's why i also give u a comment like
i hope ur joking because this reads like a copypasta
copypaste? at least u proved my point 🤣 🤣 🤣
But the only problem is, nobody knows what your point is since you can't form any comprehensible sentences.
U don't get the point so u came to talk, or else u wouldn't like that user
"Bullshit amateur animation".
Please, I beg you,
Attempt to even "reconstruct" what these "amateur animators" drew this episode,
especially in the time constraints they had.
You're nothing but an idiot
idiot or whatsoever what i dont know? i simply dont like mappa but where u got the idea that i am criticizing the animator.
"You say its sh!t? Well do better!"
What a bad take.
Most people don't even say that the episode "sucked" but just compare episode 1 with this one and tell me there is no noticeable drop in quality.
JJK deserves better, the animators deserve better, the fans deserve better.
This is one of the top studios in anime and they feed you half finished episodes and the fans gobble it up.

30% percent... Just think about how much better it could have looked if Mappa gave the animators a little more time.
I literally rewatched this episode and saw nothing bad with the animation.
"Compare it to episode 1" point doesn't make sense, show me an Anime with almost 17 episodes of back to back amazing animation.
Just because it "wasn't as good" in your eyes doesn't mean idiots like OP can criticise it, it was a beautiful episode and if you think the episode was "half finished" go watch something stupid like K-On.
Mouthbreather.
This is literally the Key Frame Animation Director of the episode in the screenshot, who said the episode is about 30% of what they wanted to do.
Its great if you enjoyed the episode, I did too. I'm just saying imagine what it could have been if not for Mappas horrendous planning and mistreatment of staff.
Ok, apologies.
I just hate people like OP not using their critical reading skills and thinking that the animation was bad. Sure, we could've got a lot better, but what we got was still heaps better then most animation to date.
one look at the staff list of this episode and u know they r not lying
Please seek help
Unfortunately you and others like you are the reason why animators are being pushed so hard; to never let go of the gas pedal. They are people, too. Also unfortunately, they are most likely working themselves to quite literally their limits, just to get their paycheck. In terms of livelihood, you are probably above these animators, and it disgusts me with everything I have to admit that. It's a shame that literal human scum is living more comfortably than them without even knowing much about their industry.
I won't go further, but I hope you understand just how vile you are as a human being. Congratulations.
Bro I have no issue with animators. I really appreciate their hard work. For this they just gave their life. I issue with Mappa assholes. They don't think about them, they are also human, they also need rest.
I have misunderstood your previous statement a bit, but it was still worded poorly. Yes, the studio themselves are the ones ultimately at fault. It's really unfortunate.
If u guys think i am not happy with the animations, it is just because of MAPPA. Hayako go and hus team is really top notch. They have done kill la kill and mob phsyco like anime what can expect from them.
Jjk is one of my fav. for that i can't watch what Mappa are doing with this.
I personally prefer more consistency between episodes, even if the individual episodes are great. Good example is that episode of Heavenly Delusion that had the guy from Trigger directing (ep. 11?), one of the best episodes I've ever seen, but the change in style and characterization was jarring.
So, yeah, it's fine to want consistency, but calling it amateur is dumb and you're dumb and your opinion is dumb
Woahhh man why r u here being so aggressive. take a chill pill it is just anime, just a usual epi. you cannot just throw ur opinion on someone else. we dont live in a tyranny world, so plz be respectful on others opinion.
feel like i should just break my monitor.

you cannot just throw ur opinion on someone else. we dont live in a tyranny world, so plz be respectful on others opinion.
so I'm not allowed to have an opinion that disagrees with yours? sounds like tyranny to me
hahahahaha good point.
bro i know u can do better than this one. give a better gif nxt time
give a better gif nxt time

>"half finished" go watch something stupid like K-On.
Really dude u use k-on as stupid reference. Jjk is best in their own perspective and k-on best in their own perspective. If u mix up jjk and k-on with each other it nothing but stupidity. If u dont like way i criticised jjk tell me ur opinion about jjk, why r u dragging k-on into this????
Kyoto production is much much better that Mappa. They thought about viewer, not like Mappa. Mappa just use us as income purposes. How can u pull Kyoto into this and even compare with Mappa(most ass production) how, why???
Dont dare to talk about K-On or Kyoto.
There are some moments with the animation like the crane "falling", the landslide of cars, or Makora being incredibly stiff. What is way more discutable is the drawings which range from gorgeous to clearly unfinished. There is a stark difference between the minimalist drawings of Makora under the water which are beautiful and some fixed plans with Makora being horribly drawn and stiff. A lot comes down to that monster since I guess it's the most difficult to do.
I'm not the type of guy who cares about that so much, but the inconsistencies of that episode is extremely visible at this point. It's clearly unfinished as the artists themselves described their work. The fact that this still looks this good speaks volumes about how talented they are, how much efforts they put into it and how tight the deadline was.
Does it look better than most other animes ? Of course. Not all the productions have such an ambitious production quality to begin with. And while it's extremely good to have such a standard, it also can backfire when you are not given enough time, because you see the two extremes in a short period of time.
The tackle to K-on is also highly unecessary especially and irrelevant... plus K-on looks extremely good so what's your point ?
