It is around vol 9 rn
But I strongly recommend reading from the start, or maybe start at vol 7 if ur impatient.

    LN Vol 7 is the volume with Sara and the folks. (I.e. like the first 3 episodes of second season). You might have noticed, but the quality wasn't all that great in the beginning. To me it seemed like they didn't quite care enough about this arc and it didn't turn out as great as it was in the LN. I assume they suggested LN 7 as it's the volume season 1 leaves off AND will result in a better experience with Sara.
    All that said, read from the beginning. It's worth it.

    I second starting from 7, if you aren't willing to start from the complete beginning. Depressed arc is good, and was rushed in its adaptation. You'll appreciate Rudy's and Sara's situation a bit more IMO.

The last episode ends after Volume 9 Chapter 6, I'd recommend reading the novel its worth it and a great way to pass time.

The anime is currently, with episode 10, caught up to around the end of chapter 8 of volume 9. However...
if you're thinking of skipping past like 9 whole volumes just to catch up to where the anime is, i strongly advise against that. the LNs have a lot of details, and context which the anime omits. This includes both big and small. from entire sub-plots, chapters, POVs, down to specific details about character's circumstances, details and exposition about the world, etc.
Ultimately the anime is a very good experience. it's a great show in its own right. But it absolutely is not a substitute for the source material, and moreover, both work best in tandem with eachother. Reading the books enhances the anime, and vice versa, imo.
This is a series where i believe it is best taken with both iterations in order to get the full experience. (that said, if you forced me to pick one or the other, i'd obviously go for the novels)
The novels are definitely the primary experience for the story. and the anime does a great job of visualizing it, but you only do yourself a disservice if you were to skip the books the anime has adapted. Like i said, they skip a lot of stuff, man.
Anyway, i hope you'll enjoy it regardless of what you do. Just know that i firmly believe it's best to properly go through the books from the beginning.
