Whaaaaats the deal with Akatsuki no Yona?! (Yona of the Dawn)

Nah, just not your cup of tea. Every show needs people who just won't like it lol. I loved it, and one obvious thing your statement tried so hard to dismiss is that this show is different, like wearing the shoe on the other foot. The anime community needs different from time to time ;D

well, i mean, i did finish it so it was good enough for that, and honestly, it wasn't bad. i just don't really see any reason to think this show is anything above average.

Yona is literally just a fem shounen protagonist copy and pasted into a harem with guys. If all you want from this series is the novelty of seeing the shoe on the other foot, go ahead, but it just seems so bland.

...you do know that there is a type of anime called shoujo, right? Though for some reason Yona is not considered a shoujo anime (and I am curious if anyone really knows why; is it because she isn't a modern schoolgirl?), the idea of a girl surrounded by handsome, heroic men who protect her has been popular since the birth of anime (i.e. a practically identical show that comes to mind immediately is the classic shoujo series Fushigi Yuugi. There is also Pretear, Vision of Escaflowne, Fruits Basket and countless other titles of similar structure.

Shoujo anime is neither as violent or vulgar as shounen anime, because it usually is targeted towards girls (not that all girls like that style of anime, but it definitely has its target audience.) This might be what makes it vanilla to you. In regards to the romance, I can't really understand what you feel is forced about it when you think of contemporaries like Tokyo Ghoul or Nisekoi which trounce baselessly all over the idea of romance.

Nonetheless I can easily say it's not for everyone. I think having finished it you can at least appreciate the rather detailed world and the conflict of rule and government. Ironically the title shares many aspects with Korean period dramas - which needless to say is also ironic because all of the characters names seem to be romanized as if they were actual Korean names.

Where did you get that idea? The manga runs in a shoujo magazine, therefore it's shoujo. It's as simple as that. The word has to do with a target demography, not some sort of abstract concept of genre.

I've read the manga which is amazing and it's great seeing it come to life as an anime. That's my main reason for liking it so much but I can understand where you are coming from.
It's definitely an anime for those that crave the classic shoujo storyline with added differences here and there to give it flavour. :)
The only thing that really annoyed me was the way Yona talked, as if we were babies that needed soothing, idk.

I do admit that her choice of behaviors seemed unreal at times. I'm not big on manga at all, but it might be worth the investigation since I actually thoroughly enjoyed this series.

  Oh, I really loved the art too which is another box that needs to be ticked for me whenever I watch something. I drop an anime straight away if the art is annoying. For example I had to force myself to finish Ookami Shoujo because they really half-assed the animation :/

What is interesting about this anime? First : the main character's development. At the beginning she appeared to be a weak young girl thinking about love and bullshit. Soon she will be surrounded by young men supposed to protect her. This is where it's scary : will they all try to seduce her? Well, no. It's not the case : she quickly pulls out of her weak woman's status to become a real leader. She's not trying to find love but rather to forget her first love. There are several men around her but it can be explained by the fact she needs warriors to help her, so I don't think we can speak about harem. The "love side" of the story only appears with Hak and in my mind it's a pretty nice duo. It's true that several scenes are clearly made for a female audience but the anime borrows also many elements from nekketsu. It's just that topics of "dreams and friendship" are replaced by those of "love and betrayal". Not everything is perfect in this anime but I found it pretty good.

Yea but this is a clear to anyone who watched it. I cant think of a single shounen that doesnt have a protagonist who starts off weak and thEn gets strong. That doesnt make a show good it makes it typical, and atleast for me, thats not really enough. That why i find it to be average at best

  I'm not talking about this kind of strenght you can find in a traditionnal nekketsu. It's more like a psychological strenght, the way that a young girl always protected by others tries to become a leader and find her place. By the way we can see that Hak is afraid to lose the Yona he knows but he also wants to discover the new Yona.

    yea i guess thats true. i think the thing im looking forward to the most (if this ever happens) is some sort of continuation where Yona has to decide whether or not she's able to kill suwon. If that ever happens and she doesn't go through with it and they have the whole "im going to let you live because your not worth killing" or " cant we just talk about this?" conclusion ima be pretty disappointed. Ill take back everything i said if Yona actually kills Suwon, that would be pretty crazy.

    I don't think that's ever going to happen honestly. Actually I also wouldn't want Su-won killed especially because he is one of the strongest points of this show. Apart from the fact that is pretty rare to be able to make a villain likeable, his psychological prophile is extremely well and attentively made : I wouldn't qualify him as "bad" but "just", he saw that his country was collapsing and decided to take matters in his own hands, he is highly intelligent but prefers to seem weak and innocent especially to make the others loose their vigilance, he knows the difference between good and evil and when he choses evil he does it being fully conscious of his actions, he plans everything, he does everything for a reason, he fixes his priorities and then he strikes, he has a strong will but also kindness, also, in that pirate-thing arc, the only plus for the Yona-team (except for that badass archery scene and friendship-bonding etc) was that they were ahead of him so the women were saved : he had already decided to investigate the issue I also like the fact that the show concentrates a lot on why the characters do what they do, so they give you more insight, and I find Yona's evolution quite realistic and fulfilling :D

I like the fact that Yona goes from sadly pathetic to absolutely awesome. The show has great feels and the characters develop quite well. The first season was more like a character introduction so it would be cool if the story progressed more in the second season. I woulld be quite dissapointed if this show was left as is, it definitely deserves a second season.

But that's just my humble opinion

The manga got me started on the anime and being a weeb in general so I guess it's not for everyone, but it does hold a special place in my heart :)

just because you like suwon doesn't mean it would be bad to kill him off. i mean, killing off developed characters only adds to the like "wtf just happened holy shit he died" moment. Killing off characters you dont care about isn't really all that shocking tbh. Just look at akame ga kill. that show in my opinion sucked ass because they had the idea that killing characters = drama and sadness when in reality, killing characters doesn't do much at all. Killing an idea or a philosophy is what hits hard so when a bunch of cardboard cut out characters die out of no where and for really stupid reasons, it just insulting to a degree. thats why i think killing suwon would be a great idea. At first it may not be satisfying but i think in the long run and after looking back on the show, people would think it was a really good way to go and make it more memorable.

Also, even though theres alot of intrigue and mystery behind Suwon and his real intentions, they never really expounded on that. He wanted to kill king Il because he supposedly killed his father. But that doesn't justify him wanting to because king and ruling over the kingdom. He doesn't come off as a guy who is power hungry or would even be interested in ruling the kingdom as well as ruining the relationships with his childhood friends. Even though King Il was looked on badly by the citizens, Suwons motivation for becoming king doesn't really seem to be rooted in wanting to make the kingdom a better place, hell, he makes almost no effort to do really much of anything at all. Suwon's motives are really hazy and if his only motivation for doing all this was to get revenge, then they REALLY fucked his character up because that just doesn't make sense. That sounds more like a justification than a motivation for wanted to be king. So all in all, there is alot of potential for Suwon to be a really well constructed character but he is shrounded in mystery. some of it good mystery, some of it .... vague and not well elaborated on mystery. i dunno...

I wouldn't like Su-won to get killed not only because I like his character but also because I think he has a huge potential which hasn't yet been fully exploited. I totally agree with "Killing an idea or a philosophy" statement but I also feel like you can't really say that all of the characters are either good or evil, so killing Su-won wouldn't exactly feel totally like justice (also, firstly , I don't think he would be stupid enough to get caught at least not until he fulfills his mission and secondly, although that would be a Yona-badass moment , killing someone you previously loved would only make you loose your humanity) .
I agree with the fact that revenge is not a justification for him wanting to become a king, but I feel like it's not just that: I feel like it's a pile of resentment rising throughout the years up to the critical point, all starting with his father's death and ending with the decay of the kingdom (through corruption, poverty and inertia) . Whether or not he has hidden reasons... I hope to find out, but I guess there is a war coming :D
