isnt the rating linked higher than what you just gave it?

uhhh.... I still editing my list currently so I'm going all over the place.
In my opinion I demon slayer is a 8.3 ish with some really high pits (season 2 episode 10 and 11 plus movie were 8.7 ish) Im not gonna act like it some masterpiece but why are people acting like it some mid show. It plot isn't amazing but it still a ride to watch. I wanna hear if you disagree or agree
isnt the rating linked higher than what you just gave it?
uhhh.... I still editing my list currently so I'm going all over the place.
Demon Slayer is enjoyable but the characters and very simple and unlikable (at least in my case). The story like you said is also pretty simple. Just a simple anime with amazing animation. I think it pisses people off that ufotable is adapting a manga like that and the high scores it gets which it probably dosen't really deserve. It's crazy to me that KNY has higher rating than series like Madoka Magica.
Agree with you on the most part. The characters in my opinion need more depth.
The only anime with worse (simpler, bland) characters I saw was Shinsekai no Yori, compared to those characters, the ones in KNY are masterfully written.
You just casually dropped the best take at the end
four words: All style, no substance
agree. if the animation was mid then the anime would be incredibly boring. show.
Tbh I never got why some people say the only good thing about it is the production quality, I mean yeah it's amazing obviously and definitely enhances the experience, but I wouldn't love it as much if it wasn't for the characters and the story. Plus, I really doubt animation alone can carry a series to such huge popularity, to the point where it becomes one of the best-selling comics of all time.
Simpler stories with simple characters are more likely to sell to a wider audience, hence why almost everyone who watched it, enjoyed it to some degree. I personally have not found a single character I liked in this series, more than anything I disliked most of them or they were just "okay".
I get not liking the characters, that's personal preference after all, but they're definitely one of the biggest selling point of the series imo. I find most of them to be charming and very easy to like/grow into you throughout, and it helps that the cast is large and everyone feels unique from each other, both in design and personality. They might not be the most complex characters but they surely aren't "bland" either.
Well yeah, they aren't bland I guess. I mostly like complex characters, hence why none of those in Demon Slayer appealed to me.
For me, the issue doesn't really comes from Demon Slayer itself but the "Classic Battle Shounen" sub genre
Before I explain further, I'm giving a warning, I don't want to be offensive or aggressive in this comment, I may be due to lack of communication skills, but if anyone is offended by what I'm saying, I'm sorry it wasn't my intent. Everybody is free to like whatever they like
Ok so, for me, this sub-genre tend to be kind of all the same (most of the time). When I watch Fairy Tail, Kimetsu no Yaiba, Boku no Hero Academia, One Piece, Naruto, etc, I feel like it just a reuse of the same story told in different perspective. I know the same could be use for all sub-genres, but the codes of that one tend to resonate less and therefore I kind of find them repetitives
When it comes to Kimetsu no Yaiba itself, I would say that the story and characters are pretty generic (with some character down unsupportable). Those are two points that are the key for a good story for me
The animation and music are amazing, but that's not something that will make me a story. It's icing on the cake. If I like the story/characters and the animation/OST are great, it's even better. If they aren't, it's disappointing but it won't affect much of my enjoyment.
And in the other hand, I think a lot of people hate it because it's popular and therefore automatically brings hate towards it
Yeah I agree, the genre in my opinion lacks substances. I think you word it well to be honest.
Every season of the show and the film has an average score of at least 83, with the highest being the film at 87. So your rating is, quite literally, the average overall.
why would i consider it mid? (i rated the first season a 6.8. 6.5 is my threshold for watchability)
the music, gorgeous animation, JP voice acting, worldbuilding (especially around the unique breathing arts) and production values save it from total mediocrity for me, but only just. several people i know are obsessed with this show and i still don't understand why.
Animation, seiyuus and worldbuilding are KnY strongest aspects, but it comes tumbling down with it's characters, copypasting some moments and all the dropped sub-plots. I wouldn't say KnY is mediocre, but I understand why some people think otherwise.
It's boring when a one-shot demon gets a better backstory than an upper moon, when all the sad and tragic backstory is shown only while that demon is dying or we have different demons doing almost the same (like Gyutaro/Daki being 2 holding the same rank and Hantengu dividing himself).
demon slayer is literally one of the most popular and well liked modern anime tf? the only reason it looks like its "thought of as so negatively" is because popular shows inherently have more fans AND haters.
personally i am one of the haters #kimetsunoMID #deMIDslayer
Show a demon slayer fan pretty colours and he will be entertained
kinda ironic u say this with kill la kill in favorites lol
What could you possibly be talking about? Are you implying kill la kill doesn't have good plot and characters?
kill la kills plot is pretty bad yes lol
brah do not compare demon slayer to kill la kill. Kill la kill managed to tell a compelling and heartfelt story in only 25 episodes with banger animation to top it off meanwhile mid slayer over here is still being carried by the animation team
People just can't comprehend the peak storytelling, characters, animation, soundtrack, and voice acting of Demon Slayer.
demon slayer has been at the top of anime for years now, and will stay at the top until the anime ends. people dont like that. the same thing happened with naruto, and aot, mha, and it will continue with demon slayer.
the person at the top always gets the most hate
There are some people like that probably, that hate just because it's on top, even if it was masterfully written show. But from my perspective the issue actually is that KNY is a really average shounen with a lot of flaws that somehow has ufotable behind it. If this anime was done by any other lower quality studio, it would not get such a high ratings.
it certainly is not an average shonen when you compare it to the shonen of the past decade lol.
it far surpasses black clover, boruto, fice force, jujutsu kaisen (so far), assassination classroom, seven deadly sins, dr stone, blue exorcist, bleach,,, i think you get the point. and thats me being objective. i personally would put it above csm, mob psycho, and possibly even haikyuu at times
I suprasses Boruto, sure.
Seven deadly sins... hmmm, yeah, I guess.
About Black Clover, characters on a similar level of writing, animation is a W for DS, story is a W for Black Clover, so they are comparable to each other.
Jjk is a little bit better in every aspect so not much more to say xD
Assassination isn't even a battle shounen XDDDD
Blue Exorcist is average af show, probably on similar level to DS, but DS wins because of animation.
Bleach... I have not watched even half of it so hard to say, but might be better.
Dr Stone... I hate this anime so much, more than Demon Slayer and I watched only first season, no opinion on that.
if demon slayer only being better than 90% of shonen is somehow average then not much to tell you there. shonen has always been a generic genre with lackluster story telling that is made up for with epic action.
hxh disastrous chimera arc is forgotten about because of epic meruem fight
one piece disastrous pacing is forgotten because of epic fights
naruto filler is forgotten because of epic fights
this is just how shonen is, and you have seen enough anime by now that you should have understood this. blaming an anime and the studio for putting all their baskets into the MAIN focal point of shonen is a bit ignorant

if there is no character development how are you supposed to relate to and care about characters? Sure, good animation can still make it enjoyable to watch but that's about it. You will never break through to peak entertainment if you rely on only one aspect of your show to carry you.
If a character is given time to be developed in a meaningful way then their death will be that much more impactful to the audience and make it more memorable. A battle shounen is not just about the battle, its about the fighters themselves and the motivations that drive them to overcome obstacles in their journey.
Ok, ok, ok. I know it's been 11 months and all, but I need to step up here. I give you Boruto and even 7DS and Ao no Exorcist but...
First of all, this is a forum about the MANGA, not the ANIME.
Man, saying it's better than Black Clover? Just Grey has more character growth and development than every character in KnY. The World Building in KnY sucks, compared to the one in BC. And the story... Koyoharu doesn't know how to tell a story, only throws flashbacks here and there trying to make you like the new bad guy that appeared 2 chapters ago and is now dead, and repeat, and repeat, and repeat... While Tabata makes you love the characters and is a great user of foreshadowing storytelling and has a well written and coherent Story.
Ass Class is not even a battle shonen and still has better character development and storytelling than KnY. I dare you to tell me that Koro-Sensei's story isn't by far better than the whole KnY... I double dare you
Dr. Stone? Again, not a battle shonen and still, it's even funnier, more serious and has a better world building and better written story than KnY, not to speak about the characters...
Bleach? Please, KnY is a Bleach wannabe. Hashira? Squad captains wannabe. Demons? Arrancar wannabe (They even share the flashbacks). Muzan? Aizen... I mean, Michael Jackson wannabe. But again, as per usual with KnY, it's world building, storytelling and character development falls deeply short in comparison with this battle shonen. Ichigo is, just like any other MC, a protector, but it's not as bland and boring as Tanjiro. Compare Muzan with Aizen... C'mon, let me read you saying that that half-assed vampiric Michael Jackson is nowhere near Aizen, Meruem, Freezer, Cell, Madara, Hao Asakura, Lucius Zogratis, Sukuna....
And what surprised me the most is you say it surpasses Haikyuu at times... have you really read the manga, or just watched the anime? Cause man, you're so wrong... I mean, tastes are like colours, ok, but comparing a spokkon with a battle shonen AND EVEN MORE, comparing one of the bests with one of the worst... you sure have balls
Overall, KnY manga is bad written, with no character development at all or world building. Filled with flashbacks to try and make you like a character that is already dead the moment you see the flashback. The main villain is hilarious, a meme. The drawing is ok at times, but it's "meh" most of the time, and the battles are a chaos. There's not a memorable character, a character that you will remember 10 years from now, when KnY anime adaptations end. KnY will stay a mid series only remembered by its animation.
yeah, no.
hating on shit just because it's popular will always be an L take, and i haven't met anyone like that since i was a teenager. have you stopped to consider that maybe people's distaste is valid and mostly well-considered?
i mentioned my reasons why i consider demon slayer mid in this thread already, but i didn't even get into aspects of the actual story that i can't stand, outside of the author's writing nezuko as a pet instead of a character and creating the screeching dead weight that is zenitsu.
i was actually somewhat enjoying this story until zenitsu showed up and sucked all the air out of the room, but what truly drained my desire to watch another season of this was
i do not care that this show is popular; many of my absolute favorite anime are quite so. there's lots to like about demon slayer, but the story itself lost me in the first season. narrative and characterization are the biggest reasons why i watch anything and neither are there for me.
I think it's a great series to get someone into anime but for veterans it's nothing exhilarating excluding many fights
I think Ufotable's animation made it what it is but other than that story and characters don't do much to enhance the series
That's because in reality it is just a very mid show when you take into account all aspects of it. The characters are very bland and their personalities are limited to one little quirk that differentiates them from the others. The backstories and motivations of pretty much every character are the same and after a couple seasons it gets bland. The formula for the progression of the story has been the same every season with them slowly working their way up the chain of command and losing Hashira along the way. Its just very predictable.
The reason why the show is regarded highly by many other people is because of the animation, and yeah, the animation is absolutely stellar. It's some of the best animation I've seen since starting anime which is really saying a lot. The problem is the substance, the show just doesn't have much of it, which is why I can't give it anything higher than a 3/5 when it comes to quality.
I'd also like to say that a rating of 8.3/10 is not mid at all. That is a very high score. A mid is 5/10.
I completely agree It's not a Masterpiece but it's definitely not mid
I agree, it not mid. The characters are decently enjoyable with some good ones, obani, muchiro, Tanjiro. it like a high seven or a low eight with some high eight moments
Exactly
It's a half-decent story with a few fun characters that (as someone who has read the manga) wouldn't be nearly as famous or acclaimed without Ufotable's animation.
There's plenty of other Shonen stories that have more interesting plots and characters or include new ideas to break away from typical Shonen Jump formula or have a message/philosophy they want to get across. Plus all the great stuff that isn't Shonen.
I also think part of the backlash is that 8.3 is actually a really strong score. The Entertainment District arc at 8.7 is currently the 28th highest rated TV show on anilist and the 37th highest rated of any type of anime. Right in between Vinland Saga S1 and Attack on Titan S4 P1.
Once Demon Slayer has finished and the dust has settled we'll all have a chance to look back at it in its entirety. Either the fans will realise they overhyped it, or the detractors will realise they were being too negative. Who knows til then
The story does the most dramatic thing possible very time, even if it doesn't make sense. Giving all the demons sad backstories never made me feel anything for them and it got old fast.
I agree most backstory's just feel like a stupid sob story to convince the reader to feel bad for them.
Haven't seen it yet after all this time, but I think it is good even though scores may be a bit conflicting.
if the show wrapped up after the 2nd season, I would've said that it was pretty good show
I don't think it has enough substance to sustain the anime for much longer, the 3rd season was just a copy paste of the 2nd season in a different setting and was also not as good.
For it's sake, I hope it wraps up quick (no idea how much the story has progressed)
P.S. I don't really put too much emphasis on animation so the one outstanding thing it does (popular opinion), doesn't really make the show anything special for me
Probably 2 more seasons until they finish everything up
DemonSlayer is like Hell's paradise but better, both only have action which is fun to watch but are complete lackluster when it comes to other aspects like characters, villains and story, but atleast it has got cool villains, so yeah, its an epic anime if you consider it from a modern shounen pov tho
It's not better than 90% of other shounens, or rather, it depends. Among the popular shounens it is average, but there is so much bad/medioker noname shounens that it actually might be. Yeah, sure, battle shounens focus mainly on fights, that's true, but that dosen't mean they can't have an amazing story told and good characters. Ofc you are not gonna find extremely deep characters in those type of shows, but those in Demon Slayer are not even in the good characters category.
hxh disastrous chimera arc is forgotten about because of epic meruem fight
This fight is one of the least memorable things from this arc for me, L take
one piece disastrous pacing is forgotten because of epic fights
Ohhh you don't even realize how much people shit on OP pacing, everyone who watched this anime agrees on this to some extent. And One Piece has a few epic fights, but are people really watchis OP for this? Because I was not.
naruto filler is forgotten because of epic fights
It's forgotten because everyone just skipped it? xD
i like how both of u cant even name these said shonens that are apparently better than demon slayer lol
Chimera Ant Arc is far from "disastrous." The beginning is a bit slow ig? But the Meruem fight is far from the best part of that arc. It's not even Meruem's best moment in that arc.
One Piece is my second favorite anime oat and even I can agree that the pacing is awful. However, I would say that most people don't watch One Piece for "epic fights." The story it tells is soooo much better than the fights. Honestly, most of the are pretty mediocre compared to a lot of shounen.
Most people skipped the filler in Naruto. Speaking as someone who didn't, the filler is still forgotten because it isn't relevant to the story. I'll give you that Naruto's popularity largely comes from its fights.
Also, I totally understand that the list of shows you made in your first comment are your opinion and I totally respect that but I have trouble agreeing with it "far surpassing" most of the shows you listed. The past decade of Shounen has been pretty strong IMO and DS is certainly part of why it's been a strong decade. but compared to the rest of the shows it is "average" -- and being average amongst very strong entries still makes it very good (at least in my opinion).
mugen train showed pretty well that in a short time frame, u can introduce a character and kill them off in a way that will leave the viewers feeling something.
eh at the end of the day demon slayer is rated higher than mid psycho 100 and thats all that matters
so... i take it you're actually not bothered at all by the reasons why i stopped watching? ...okay then.
greater popularity doesn't necessarily mean something is 'better', friend. neither artistic merit nor my personal enjoyment are affected by others' ratings. in the end, i'm glad you like demon slayer. because so many of my friends love this show, i wanted to share their enjoyment too... but i can't because of its clumsy and often distasteful writing.
and that's perfectly OK.
