if i were to take a guess, there's plenty of people that don't want to support MAPPA directly.
streaming is one thing but $60+ for a volume with 3 episodes on a show that most people will only watch once is a shot in the dark. bocchi on the other hand is a once in a generation masterpiece (in my opinion) and most people seem to like cloverworks.

check out the reddit thread for more substantial discussion, but the main sentiment seems to be that CSM's overall direction didn't do well with the types of Japanese anime fans who are the primary consumers of physical

1. CSM didn't fully understand its source material.
2. It focused a lot on imitating western cinema.
3. No self insert/relatability bonus for the main crowd that actually buys these overpriced Blu-Rays in Japan i. e. otaku salarymen with social anxiety.
4. Fewer traditionally moe cute girl characters.
5. Bad CGI and rotoscoped animation (atleast I think so just from the look, I haven't looked into it. But occasionally awkward animation even if it isn't rotoscoped) - Especially compared to something ambitious and inspired like Bocchi.

    Scores are subjective. Mid for me is 7/10, since that's my mean score.
    I only buy JP blue-rays for shows I rate 9/10 and 10/10.

  News is out, sales for Chainsaw Man flopped. Its not particularly surprising, as the public reception of the show wasnt very good anyways. A show which was given AoT level hype was immediately brought down with early episode animation struggles, as well as poor creative directing.
  I honestly think this show disappears into the background in the coming years. It got practically nothing done in the 13 episodes it aired with, and it just feels like a worse JJK.

Once again, the idea that bluray sales are an indicator that an anime wasnt successful hasn't been true for at least half a decade or so, if not even longer.

Once again, the west face the reality that they aren't the main market. Sure they aren't the sole determining factor for success. But given the circumstances and how the company themselves expected MUCH more sales and went all out marketing and with events it's clear.
This is a one way thing: more blu ray sale = good , less blu ray sale = bad.
And sales of physical media and associated merch is way higher profit margins than streaming services.
(plus 99% of you wouldn't buy any blu rays either way and a large portion of you pirate)

BDs for anime is a collector's item for die heart fans. Low sales are usually caused by one or more of the following reasons:
1. The die heart fan base is small (popularity);
2. The die heart fan base don't tend to spend (genre); and
3. The die heart fan base is unhappy with the product (adaptation).
