Is Bleach an isekai?

Yes. Bleach is an isekai.
Isekai as a genre has "branches". Some are like depending on how you move. The ones you can move more than once, and the ones you die to move, the ones protag is just possessing someone there during its dreams.
Is it a isekai?
~ Does the world differ from current? -> Isekai
~ Does the physics differ? Like there is magic? -> isekai
Narnia and Yankee in king arthur's court are considered isekai too.
(I am citing wikipedia on these)

ok i know this is a huge digression but i just read the first several chapters of a Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (i never had to in school) and i loved it so much it made me sad about all the time ive wasted reading LNs. mark twain is infinitely more fun to read. also he shows lots of details of 1800s America by his comparisons to England. so ty for the motivation to continue.

Bleach is not a Isekai. Here are my thoughts,
Isekai is when the protagonist keeps memories from their past life and have no choice but to live with their a new identity in a new reality.
I wont consider an anime Isekai when protagonists could transport between worlds under normal circumstances (not plot twist, special story arc taking place etc). And If the exit or entrance to their original reality was blocked, this obstacle would will be resolved at some point in the story

  By new identity, I was thinking of role/responsibility protagonists obtained in their new world. Like a Morden Japanese high school student becoming a son of a monster slaying hero in a fantasy world. I agree Not all Isekai protagonists loss their original appearance, but their daily objectives are objectively different from their original reality

Out of curiosity, how about a setting where you, the viewer, know that they came from a different world but not the main character; for examples, Black Summoner (BS) and [New Life+] Young Again in Another World (NL+)? Kelvin, the main character from BS, exchanged his past memories for powers and Renya, the main character from NL+, had his memories erased by the god. And if I remember correctly, both of these characters weren't reborn as infants, but we're given a younger body from the start. Thanks for your thought.

I'd say no. Soul society isn't another world. It is a part of the world in Bleach. Same reason DBZ isn't, same reason YYH isn't, etc etc.

I see, I see. My friend also said the same thing that Soul Society and Hueco Mundo are part of the Human World; therefore, Bleach isn't an isekai even if people/souls are transported/reborn to Soul Society/Human World after they die. Does that make Digimon not an isekai since the Digital World and the Real World are connected?

  I would say digimon is closer just because the two worlds do seem to be pretty distinct other than when things go bad while all the different "worlds" in Bleach all function together.

YYH is, there is a whole arc about they cutting a hole between the dimensions into the Makai.

    After they open the hole/gateway, you can walk from one to another passing through it.

    Again, this doesn't make something an isekai.
    I haven't seen Rayearth, don't remember much about MAR, and Inuyasha I don't think I'd say is an isekai either but it is different than those other works that I mentioned as the time travel component of it is supernatural even in their world. That isn't a normal occurrence, its "otherworldly". The same isn't true for YYH, DBZ, Bleach, etc.
    I have no idea what your check list is for.... again.... not really what defines an isekai.

Bleach does use the reincarnation trope. When souls die, they reincarnate back into the Human World. When soul reapers die, they mostly either reincarnated to the Human World or return back to Soul Society with no memories of their past-self.

A human dies, meets a soul reaper, and goes to Soul Society or Hell. What is the difference between afterlife and isekai? Can going to heaven or hell be consider isekai? Meeting a god/goddess before being sent somewhere else sounds more like purgatory.

  Heaven and hell is a dimension that's apart of their world that's not considered an Isekai lmao that's not even another world. Heaven is a place in their universe and every humans universe that's far up in the sky's and hell is a place far down below. They're in the same universe. This is further proof because they interact with hollows back out in Japan because they're dimension and ours is connected because it's all apart of the same universe.

  Also if it was another world (which I stress it isn't) the mc meeting a goddess for a couple minutes is not what makes the show an Isekai the fact that he's in a totally different world that's no where near the same as being his is what makes it an isekai

    Okay. Then I have a few questions. Would you consider Digimon an isekai, or at least the 2nd season where the main characters can freely move from the real world to the digital world?
    Some people also consider series like Sword Art Online, BOFURI, and Accel World as low form of isekais. Would you agree with them? If you do, why can't Bleach be some sort of low form of isekai as well?
    Spoilers for Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody. The main character, Satou, goes to sleeps after overworking and woke up to an another world that is similar to a game that he had helped develop. Much later in the story, he gains the ability to space travel and visit various planets of the universe including Earth. Can this series still be consider an isekai even though it started off as one?

    As for series like SAO, Bofuri, and Accel World, no, they are not isekais because the games exist in the same world they are in - it's just a virtual reality. Log Horizon itself fits both VR and Isekai since there's no way to get back to the real world, but it's seen as a VR show first and foremost, since the game itself still exists within the realm of their world.
    As for Death March, it is an isekai because he has passed away and is transmigrated into a world that he has to re-accustom himself to with no way to get back to reality. This also goes for Overlord because there is no foreseeable way to make it back to reality and so his reality is now the game he was transmigrated into.
    Essentially, if one can make it back to the real world or the game exists alongside real-time in the story, then it's considered a virtual reality show.
    If it's a completely new world, with no way to sign out/no way back to reality (as the MC knows it to be), then it's considered an isekai - hence why Log Horizon is one to fit both classifications. SAO Aincrad & Alicization may be loosely considered isekais, but since the world itself exists out of those arcs and the characters are just trapped, they're primarily considered VR.
    There's also difference between fantasy, reincarnation, vr, isekai, but I think that's been explained a bit above.

On other note

If I combine these replies, I see you had an issue with separate world aspects of Bleach and YYH, but you shouldn't have it anymore, right?
Ningenkai, Reikai, Makai (this is quite a recurring place on all isekai, Iruma is getting classes there for example),
尸魂界 (Soul society, dead soul's world), 虚圏 (Ueco Mundo, the Empty sphere/World in spanish), Kubo picked the names himself...

Given Bleach arcs are mostly in soul society or Ueco mundo and final arcs of yuyu are in Makai
And then as isekai is more than a separate world, I called out some tropes.

Same way Shinigami stamping their swords into people's souls to get them into soul society, a guy opening a portal inside his house. and people running through a marsh following a butterfly.
And time flows not following the same rhythm between places.
Remembering, Ichigo/Yuusuke were normal yankee highschool students.

Is your criterion for isekai "not being able to return their original world"? Or are you only applying that logic for VR/game world?

As for Death March, in the light novel, he does gain an ability to travel back and forth from his new world to his original world as it turns out that the world he was summoned to is in the same universe as Earth. It turned out that he didn't enter a game's world, but an actual world in the universe.

Since the other person essentially said everything I was gunna say I'll only answer the digimon part. It's still an Isekai it just turned into a reverse Isekai where the people from one world go into the real world instead of someone from the real world going into a digital world. I really don't think the definition of Isekai is this hard to understand.

You'd be surprised. Your definition of isekai won't be the same as others'. I've seen comments, reviews, Reddit posts, and Youtube videos that consider some animes to be isekai even though, in my opinion, they're not, such as BOFURI, World's End Harem, Dr. Stone, and several other fantasy animes. Even in this post, I had people telling me different things of what they considered to be an isekai. Also, people already tagged Chillin’ in My 30s after Getting Fired from the Demon King’s as isekai on Anilist.

  this is like arguing what does the word persistent mean. There's no arguing it there's a meaning and that's the meaning. People confuse fantasy with Isekai bc almost every Isekai they see takes place in a fantasy looking setting. Like Goblin Slayer is in this fantasy world with goblins n shit but it's not an Isekai bc no one there died and got reincarnated to another world or are in another world. That's the world that character has been in since the beginning. But not every Isekai has to be in a fantasy setting that's just what's being done all the time now bc that's what makes alot of money. Bright pretty colors appeals to a mass audience it's pleasing to the eyes. But an Isekai can take place in any kind of setting. Now and then here and there is a post apocalyptic military setting.
