yeah that's understandable. the first season is a botched adaptation and from what i've heard, was really only made to promote the source material. i personally prefer the novels by a sizable margin as they are written with much more nuance, but hopefully season 2 can rectify its predecessor.

rather than botched I'd just say that the mental mind games and monologues of the characters falls a bit in an adaptation
it's fine for a novel but an anime would suffer if it didn't adapt them in a creative way
from what I hear Monogatari manages to make exposition and long-winded dialogue scenes way more interesting to look at visually same goes for Fate/Zero's infamous "spinning scene"

Kirei at this time is a man whose wife has died from sickness and disease he's a person with no clear sense of self and simply being a devoted and dogmatic soldier to those around him
the way Rise and Tohsaka move around him is like that of Sharks circling prey one which they can use as a pawn for their own schemes with Rise simply wanting to back a suitable mage to obtain the grail and Tohsaka wanting to reach the root using the grail
Yeah it's exposition but it already tells you a lot about the characters personalities before going into the more heavy parts of the war setting up those moments in fact with a brief basis for these characters
