I agree, the fact that it is 24 episodes also means that we can see more character development and backstory.

YES, 24 episodes was perfect.
I first discovered this anime 2 years ago but never really decided to watch it until a few days ago. Maybe it's cause it have been a while since I've watched a romance anime, but Golden Time was really great. The story, the ups and downs, everything. My feelings really got played with on this 24 episode coaster. Did anyone feel differently?

YES, 24 episodes was perfect.
Kouko got a lot more tolerable as the series went on, I actually liked her by the end
Same, at the start she was simply just [redacted]
I was team Linda for the first 12 episodes, but later in the series I started to slowly see the charm in Kouko and started to love her character more.
I haven't rewatched it since 2014 so this is just going off my notes on here, but I really wasn't a fan.
It has some decent episodes, but it took 14 episodes for Kouko to have more to her personality than just being a stalker and Banri is just pathetic and waffles between being hyper emotional or apathetic.
My biggest issues though were with the reliance on misunderstandings and memory loss for any real plot developments. Rather than having grounded relationship drama the show just has Banri forget Kouko and cry for Linda or run away and it operates more like a hyper-split personality where he's just a different character from episode to episode (or scene to scene in some cases) rather than recovering memories.
Banri honestly is what killed the show for me, he's such a manipulative bastard that I really didn't care what his backstory was. Dropped it early
I recall slogging through it because the weekly discussions on Reddit were humorous to follow along with. It's definitely the type of show I would normally have dropped after a couple episodes if not for that. There's pretty much nothing likeable, which is a real tough sell for a romcom.
People don't like Banri cuz they're cowards scared of metrosexuals
I accidently spoiled a bit for myself through reading some stuff on google, i patiently waited as i went through the anime trying to finish it a day wondering if what i read was right or wrong praying that it isn't. Sadly at the end it wasn't as bad as i read but i was still disheartened and heartbroken a bit, the struggle is real nevertheless it was still such an amazing anime unlike all i've seen in the past year
Yeah it was great. I loved it a lot, maybe because during the time I was not watching romance often and decided to randomly watch Golden Time.
That was the same for me
Umm, I got a romance phobia?. So sorry man, I gotta pass this.
What's romance phobia? Is it like something after the fact of watching a romance anime or while watching it? I think I have it too
For both instances. Even thinking about being in a relationship sounds so tedious.
I know i am really late to this, but how is Golden time a Romcom? Because it's not, It's a Drama Romance, it's also not advertised as a Romcom so you definitely went in with the wrong expectation.
Preach Brother
How the hell is Banri manipulative??
it’s been over a year since i watched it, but iirc there was a scene where banri was like “if you don’t like me romantically then i don’t want to be friends” to the very blatantly mentally unwell blonde girl and then he walked away, then the blonde girl OF COURSE goes “wait…i do like you :,(“
i dropped it after that episode
all of them fuck up at times, i wouldn't call that ''manipulative'', he's just impulsive because kouko was also mean...
it wouldn’t be so bad if the ending of the episode wasn’t framed as a romantic confession from kouko and not what it actually was — banri being a complete asshole. once the romantic music started playing i rolled my eyes turned it off and never revisited it, and i’m feeling comfortable with my decision.
everything that’s been said to me regarding it “actually not being manipulative” makes me think that y’all believe Banri was entitled to love just because the girl hung out with him, and from that perspective sure. i guess it makes sense lol
agree to disagree
That's not being manipulative. Banri had enough of being in the friendzone and stood up for himself. Like he was tired of how she was always hanging out with him but would change the topic when he talked about his feelings.
it is absolutely being manipulative lol. he was basically her only friend at that point and he said “if you don’t want to fuck me then this relationship is over,” that is textbook manipulation
He didn't do it with the intention of knowing that she would also like him. He did it for himself because he felt that he was just being used by her.
this is true tho i just found this thread so thought i should read this one out
i really did not like the main character that much in the show
tbh that must be the main reason why i didnt had any interest in the romantic relationship buildup in the series for the most part
some moments were good ngl but other than that it was a mess
Honestly I think the slow character development is what made Kouko great. I personally like things like that and have never thought of Banri as pathetic. I mean he's just a normal dude that fell of a bridge and lost his precious memories.
There's slow and then there's being utterly unlikeable for an entire cour, especially when the series doesn't really paint it as a problem.
I just liked Linda more than Kouko at the start. Other than that I didn't have a problem with sitting in bed and binging it.
I can't remember much of it at this point, it's been 8 years. It was while it was airing that I saw it and maybe the weekly format was a detriment to that, having to "live" with these terrible characters for weeks and months.
