Season 3 probably won't be considered until the current arc, Alicization, ends.
Considering how much better season 2 was compared to season 1, and from the good things I've heard about Alicization, yeah I'd be down for another season.
I heard that there is a 3rd season of sword art online
is it true or what
and what season did you guy's prefer the 1st or the 2nd ???

I wouldn't mind if it just ended but I'd also be fine with another season.
Nothing's been announced yet.
When it's going to air, we don't know. I'm guessing around mid-2016, as A-1 have got a handful of other projects in progress and plus Alicization (S3) is the biggest arc there is.
According to the people who've read the LNs... Alicization should be way more than the standard 24-26 episodes, considering the amount of material there is needed to cover across the volumes.
I liked both seasons to be honest. But I agree with @Bling, I did like S2 more.
I as well hope there will be a third season, however for the Alicization arc they will have to squeeze A LOT of it into 12-24 episodes, because Alicization by itself has 7 volumes now and still counting, while SAO > GGO only took 8 volumes.
Points already stated by the users above.
SAO 3 won't be for a while, probably for another year or two.
I prefer season two. Season two was an improvement over season 1, most notably the character development portion.
SAO 3 is most likely to come out within a two year gap like season 1 did. Given the amount of time that it will take to plan out the development and that S2 finished recently in December.
It would be awesome if SAO 3 took place in GGO, the few times that they did fight in GGO was epic and amazing. Imagine the whole crew there.
If I remember correctly Alicization takes place in 'The underworld'.
Please no spoilers! But okay
It's been done before where series have done OVAs that have nothing to do with the orig material, so they very well could do a GGO side arc, even a short 10 series would be epic.
I feel like they hinted towards it in the last few minutes of at the end of SAO 2. Hopefully, it won't be like that last part at the end. I absolutely hated it. Every other arc was better than that last one.
Well i guess all of you prefer the s2 cause of the arc of gun gale online but in my opinion i prefer s1 if they just maked the first arc longer it would be sick for real
In s2 the last arc was just sad but what made me think that there is a s3 that how kirito got the new sword excalibur and klien got thor's hammer
But like the most of you it would be great of there is s3
and i didn't read it manga
NGL, if they extended the Aincrad arc to the full 25 eps, it would've been awesome.
Do not say the forbidden one's name or it shall appear. Begone heathen.
A third season is a fact once the current arc (Alicization) is completed in the light novel, SAO is just too much of a franchise already to let it go that quick.
I'm pretty sure there will be one because there are still arcs to cover.
The first 5 episodes of S1 one were great but it went downhill from there. I did enjoy the Mother's Rosario Arc though
i found out by a realizable source that it going to be maby mid to early 2016. I think they might do the 12-24 episodes and a movie but not to sure bout that.
I preferred the 1st by far. A third season....really? Why?
They're gonna have to squeeze a lot into 25 episodes...
I'm fine with the action n all, but i personally think that alicization is something that can't jst be rushed through with all the master apprentice thing and how he has to go and meet quite a large number of characters before even proceeding to the main conflict. Anyhow, i love the story, i wouldn't mind if it ended here, but SAO III is fine too as long as they carefully reproduce it in detail. :)
I am 75% confident that there will be a Season 3. They already left a cliffhanger at the end of SAO II.
it won't even have trapkirito so what's the point
^ they should have kiritos avatar in season 3 accidentally be carried over from ggo because its like rare and maybe his file data set it to default xD and then to make him feel better, all the girls change to man avatars and then make some sort of yona of the dawn reference half way through
I hope when it comes out there will be no Kirito harem...I mean we all realize that the SANDWICH will still win no matter what?!
i liked season 2 more than season 1, but i was massively disappointed to see that they still fell into the same harem trap where sinon, a complex and important character from the first half of the season just became part of the silent unimportant harem of women following kirito around through alfheim. I mean, once focus shifted on to asuna it improved, but the begining of the second half was meh. i also feel that sinon will just become a cardboard cutout following kirito around for god knows what reason when season 3 finally comes around.
There probably won't be a season 3 until they at least confirm with the author timeline-wise when the Alicization arc will end.
Oh, and The Mother's Rosario arc in S2 is undoubtedly the best SAO offered so far.
(yup, I'm very late)
"During the A-1 Pictures panel at Anime Expo 2015 event this year, President Tomonori Ochikoshi has revealed that the studio has no plans to slow down the production for future seasons of the Sword Art Online anime, as long as Sword Art Online‘s author Reki Kawahara continues to write and produce more light novels"
"Tomonori Ochikoshi stated at the panel that they will continue to produce the Sword Art Online anime as long as more light novels are being published. "
There's your answer.
I think it should be noted that he said there are "no plans to slow down the production for future seasons of the Sword Art Online anime," so now we've pretty much got seasons 4, 5, 6 etc. confirmed as well lol
Pretty much. Although I haven't read the LNs, I've read up that if A-1 adapts the Alicization arc properly - then expect another 2-4 seasons of SAO. (since the Alicization arc is bigger than all of the other arcs combined)
