Actually it's recommended to play the game before the anime for several reasons :
- The game is amazing, a really well written visual novel with comedic and mystery elements mainly.
- The anime spoils a lot of things of the original game.
You don't have to understand Canaan to play 428 : Shibuya Scramble because Canaan is only a bonus spinoff to 428, and is of a really different genre (428 is mystery / comedy whereas Canaan is sci-fi / action) with a really different plot. And honestly, the game is truly better than the anime, maybe I'm biased because I love the game so much.
Unfortunately, some plot twists won't surprise you because the anime already spoiled some of them, but I think you still can try it if you can enjoy mystery visual novels.

It's been forever since I watched Canaan. But I just cannot forget it due to it feel missing something. If I have to play the game to connect the dot, then so be it.
