Probably because it was extremely well-animated, had a decently large fanbase from the manga and was more easily marketable towards a western audience. Of course, it also had a really good story and a captivating first episode.

I Can see why most AoT fans I Saw were from western, Though AoT is also extremely popular in my country, Indonesia

Like in one of episode where one of squad member trying to drink beer in front of Titan, Only for him to got eaten by that Titan

Maybe cause the plot is unique, the story is really good, it's well-animated, it's serious, there's lots of action and lots of blood, fighting against creatures you have a huge disadvantage against. All stuff that intrigues people.
Also because no "moe" stuff in this anime

The mystery of it was thrilling and kept me anticipating the truth about the world. Not to mention the concepts are very unique such as the maneuver gear and obviously the ability to tranform into a titan. AoT is commonly viewed as a normie anime but there really isn't anything quite like it.
It's simple to understand, it appeals to plenty of demographics, it's not too too long, and it was on netflix in America. Also, there are way too many likable characters

I was in middle school for the initial hype train for Season 1 in 2013
A ton of people were talking about it, even people who barely watched anime, which was crazy to see. It lived up to the hype for most people because it was just so brutal, captivating, and gorgeously animated. And then the twists Isayama threw us just made it even more fun to watch for Seasons 2, 3, etc.
Basically it started off extremely fun and accessible but grew to become a very unique and interesting series
Its cultural impact has just been massive, and was a lot of peoples introduction into mainstream anime
Sure it's all edgy and shit because of the gore and eren's aggressively shounen attitude but at the end of the day, it was a lot of fun to watch and was a breath of fresh air for a lot of people
it was really big when I was in middle school, even the kids that thought anime was weird liked it. I think it became so huge because of its amazing use of mystery in the first season, the fact that it took itself seriously, and because it didn't have any weird anime tropes

I guess mainly cause there's no anime quite like this one and whole industry lacks in good survival/post-apo things, animations also are something amazing. As series got only better and better throught years people didn't turn their backs to it like for most of others and here we are.

most anime target a specific audience, and as a result don't become popular outside of those circles. try to make a normie watch sword art online, they will be weirded out. aot feels like hollywood-y especially in early seasons
