But upon those things, the one I'm curious what people think is.. Why do you think people looked ugly? I don't believe there is a black and white answer that can illuminate this, but in my opinion, I believe..
For others to look ugly for two reasons; the first being, to illuminate a certain character and set them apart from the rest of the kids-- but then you may ask, why were the adults that way, too? I personally believe that comes with the territory of showing the world from a kid's perspective. When you're a kid, people do a lot of unexplainable things, and they look as depicted. That's at least my guess, from my perspective.
What about you guys? What do you think it symbolizes? Because I doubt it doesn't mean anything, the story is far too deep for that.

I don't mind, even if nobody responds. It took time, but that's one thing I have a lot of, lol. Although much less nowadays, I still have 2-3 hours a day for things like this lol
I mean, there is a lot of Oyasumi PunPun fans, so it's weird that no one answers. I like your attitude though
You might already know this but the author wrote oyasumi punpun with self introspection in mind and purposefully made the beginning weird to reflect his own childhood and his world view as a child
Also explain why the beginning is written so weird
Do you remember your childhood clearly ? No it a distant memory so in punpun it written like a distant memory
I thought it was just an art style the author chose. I really like unique designs like Mob Psycho, Ping Pong and 20th Century Boys so it never looked ugly to me.

##This, I think is the main reason, I remember the world feeling kinda weird and scary when I was a kid and I think for the most part, this is Asano's way of capturing that feeling.
Also, I believe in some cases a character's face is designed to represent their personality, allow me to demonstrate:
Look at how stupid these two women look! this is in chapter 47, this woman is saying "To think my son got in such a prestigious school!! It's a tragedy that I can't brag about this to every Japanese on Earth." and right before she says that we read "Punpun was not particularly happy.".
Asano shoves this woman's annoying behavior in our faces putting us in Punpun's shoes and showing us what seeing this through his eyes must feel like.
You could also make the argument that in this manga we're seeing everything through Punpun's eyes and this is not what this woman actually looks like... but <b>she might as well do</b>, you know what I mean? she might as well look like a complete fucking clown saying stuff like that.
This would also explain why every imagery in this world is so weird, maybe all of this is Punpun's understanding of reality instead of reality itself.
P.S: This isn't something that only happens in the beginning remember how displeasing Pegasus looked like? he had boogers coming out of his nose! this is something that happens throughout the manga.

While I will agree that throughout the whole manga, it's much, much more prominent at the beginning. Which attends as your previous' statements defenses. Because the fact that this whole manga is based around purely what Punpun sees, that's a point I hadn't thought of.
This is why punpun's art is amazing. Not only that this is the world that you see from the eyes of a child, if you think about it people are still ugly as ever. That's the world all these details makes you put yourself on place of punpun. That's why they were draw like doodles too. So I think it symbolizes what it literally shows, people are ugly :/
