Can I start with this to get into the Fate series?
victoriAXAug 5, 202135 replies610 viewsI've been trying to figure out the correct order of the fate series, and according to some sources I could either start from fate zero or fate stay night unlimited blade works. However I watched the 1st ep of zero some time ago and i found it boring and a bit confusing. I also saw some people saying that if you start with unlimited blade works you get to experience the series better. So, what do you suggest I do?

Start with Zero. Watch Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works and then watch the Heavens Feel Trilogy. Zero is chronologically first and happens before the other two routes/anime.

Chronologically, Nekomonogatari happens before Bake, but you don't watch it first. Zero is a prequel and should be watched afterwards.

Watch Order #1: FSN -> UBW -> HF -> Zero (Not Recommended)
This is the order that you were supposed to see the story. Unfortunately, the FSN anime is widely considered to be bad. Most fans will recommend that you skip it.Watch Order #2: Zero -> UBW -> HF
This order introduces the story with the prequel, instead of FSN. It will spoil plot twists from both UBW and HF, but you will be able to enjoy them anyway. This is the order I used.Watch Order #3: UBW -> HF -> Zero
Basically the same as #1 except skipping FSN. Some things won't be explained clearly, but it's closer to the original watch order. This is the order I personally recommend.Once you have completed one of these orders, you can freely enjoy the rest of the Fate entries. They're all either side-stories, spin-offs, or alternate universes, and you can enjoy them in any order.

Definetely not. Heaven's feel spoils the entire ending of zero and technically you shouldbt even start with ubw if you're anime only

Even though what the author intended to be watched first was fate stay night due to a very poor adaptation in the mid 2000s by studio DEEN nobody ever gave two shits about it. If you're reading the VN only then is the ubw and the stay night route correct. If you're an anime only watch fate/zero first otherwise you will be confused and lost and the ending of zero will be spoiled which imo is the best part of the fate series (ubw kinda mid)

I personally started out with UBW because Fate/Zero is supposed to be a prequel, but Fate is one of those rare exceptions where watching the prequel first is okay. Whichever way you want to start out is fine, as long as it's with either UBW or Zero.

Yeah, but Fate Zero ruins important plot twists in Heavens Feel which slightly ruins the experience in my opinion. The only reason people start with Fate Zero, because fate stay night 2006 is a terrible adaption, and UBW doesn't do a great job at explaining things for people new to the franchise. Fate Zero actually explains how servants and the holy grail war works a lot better than UBW. If there was actually a good adaption of the fate route everything would be fixed.

While I do agree that the visual novel is the best way to experience Fate/Stay night's story. Watching the anime is perfectly fine even if the adaptions are a little flawed. However Fate/Stay night 2006 is a crap adaption and no one should watch it first.

I watched the 1st ep of zero some time ago and i found it boring and a bit confusing
Zero:- It is honestly my personal favorite. I mean like you just said it starts out really slowly but as time goes on the pacing will pick up and the slow boring nature will be seen as a good thing as this meant that they wouldn't have to stop in middle of a battle to explain anything. Basically when it gets good it gets really good. Which also means if you want to watch the rest of stay night zero is a good place to begin. But I just warning you so that you won't fall fall into the same trap as I did. Zero and the rest of stay night are dramatically different from each other. Zero is bit more of a character study. Zero and stay night revolves around an event called the holy grail war. This is basically a battle royal with 14 participants(7 masters and 7 servant(If you don't know what that means don't worry about it. You will get it when you watch the shows, any of them)). In zero each participant with the exception of 2 all get similar amount of spotlight. I mean it is a battle royal so the amount of participant are going to reduce but when they are alive they get a fair amount of time in spotlight. This means that you get to know, understand and care about each and every character. Each of them have a heavy amount of philosophical thought put into them.
UBW(Unlimited Blade Works):- This is more of your standard Shonen. Zones in on some major character making you care almost as much as zero about them. With heavens' feel you get to see a bit different supporting character. Personally not as good as Zero.
Heaven's Feel:- Watch this after UBW. Doesn't matter about zero but after UBW. They are assuming that you have already watched UBW so they summaries the initial events with a small montage which you won't understand if you haven't watched UBW. This show is basically UBW's start but a little later it explores a story if a few other certain events took place instead of what happened in UBW.
Apocrypha:- Forget about the other when watching this. Not done by the same studio so a bit different approach to animation and art style.
Fate/GO:- Just give up here if you don't play the mobile game.
