WhytShadowJun 17, 202153 replies1.8K viewsAs some of you might be aware, Record of Ragnarok released today. However, it was banned from Netflix India (even the trailer is blocked on youtube) simply because it has the Hindu Deity Shiva in it.
It's a loss for those who live here and are unable to watch it directly from the source but that is still acceptable to some extent as religion is a delicate matter in many ways.
However, the fact that so many people are leaving extremely low ratings on the AniList page for the anime (0-10/100) solely for that reason, without even watching the anime is really disheartening to see. All the effort put in by the production team is being thrown away pointlessly and such an amazing anime that deserves high ratings is being held down by these drastically low numbers, resulting in an overall drop in popularity.

Anyway, to the mods, it is my humble request to you that if it is possible, could you deal with this in some way or maybe get rid of the excessive amount of low ratings, since anyone who has watched this anime or has read the manga will confirm that even if they didn't exactly like it, it is in now way deserving of a score as low as 0. Anything below 30 feels like it was done merely out of spite.
In my opinion, people are free to live by their ideals and follow what they feel is right, hence if you have a problem with the anime, don't watch it. Just kindly refrain from trashing on someone's efforts by leaving negative reviews when you haven't even taken the time or effory to appreciate what they have produced.

We have historically cleared out accounts that seemed to be fake to influence the scores on the site when they have been noticed, while it does look like their is a marginally higher amount of extremely low scores for this, I'm not totally sure its a great example of vote manipulation.
Regardless we will look into this further.

The good thing abt Mal is that the people who leave low ratings early votes r removed after whole anime finishes airing . . If there's smtng like that on anilist then it'll b helpful
This is an interesting topic. I think freedom of expression is important, but with that comes freedom of criticise/getting criticised. I think it's only understandable religious people are giving negative feedback towards something they find offensive of their faith.
Yeah thats why i'm not 100% sure this is something we need to act on just based on the score chart but depending on where those scores are coming from it may be actionable.
If u read the synopsis of story . Then it's safe to assume gods are in evil here which shud be kinda like trigger warning for religious people
Idk tbh I see it the same as review bombing; which I also think should be actioned against, For example if KyoAni made a bad move or smth and as a result mass 0 scores went to K-On. Like it's technically just people expressing themselves, but as a site that wants to correctly assess how enjoyable the show was for those that watched it so others can make an informed decision, it's probably not what you want.

I haven't seen or read RoR but I doubt that people would one-bomb a series just cause a deity took part in a tournament arc.
It's most likely cause of the adaptation itself, the animation in the trailers did look pretty meh.
You have no idea how religious some people are xD, but I don't think it was due to that, cause I have seen tons of people hating on it due to animation
It's most likely the animation. There have already been a bunch of Indian cartoons that featured/poked fun at deities, those were pretty loved.

Its literally banned on netflix, hence my comment. I havent been able to watch it yet because of that and hence i cant comment on the animation. It seemed pretty good from the trailer so I was basing it off of that.
The reason for the low score is cause the manga readers didn't like the animation and character.
Netflix is the only one that's overreacting.
I doubt people who actually enjoyed the series would rate is zero and that too in such mass numbers are can be seen from the reference image. I understand that people score lower for animation but that doesn't sufficiently explain the disparate number of zeroes, it wouldn't have been so weird if it was somewhat evenly distributed in 0-10-20-30 like it is for most shows.
I'm Indian and it's incredibly interesting to see this being put on full display. We, as a country are very proud of our history and especially religion. Hinduism dominates India and the government/ majority of people very much want to respect the images of out deities. RoR is using the deity of Shiva who is one of our most devoted gods so this is a very touchy subject. Personally it's fine if they have him being put on full display on the manga but I hope for the mangaka to understand the magnitude that comes with depicting a real figure who is actually worshipped (no one worships zues, Jack the Ripper etc...).

There are plenty of anime who depict other religious figures, including one depicting jesus and buddha as being friends living in Japan.
But those are religions/ mindsets worshipped in Japan so there is a sense of respect that automatically comes with it. Japan is an extremely xenophobic society and different cultures are not portrayed accurately or even in a good mindset, many are just grouped together.
Jesus is not really worshipped there....
To take it further, they should have no obligation to treat a religious figure with any revere than they should should a real person.

Who cares if they are using the deity of Gods? Also Shiva is also worshipped in Japan. So it's not exclusively a Hindu deity.

there's a reason 0 as a score is available on this site. You might've given the anime a 10/10. how'd you like if someone told you to change or rating or told the mods that the anime is not worthy of 10/10 rating.
also, I don't think religious people would go out of their way to put down a show. But I haven't seen many hardcore people of your religion or any religion in general, so idk

I'm not blatantly saying it without any basis, you can see how abruptly the ratings graph has shifted. If it was something that deserved a score like that then there would be a gradual dip. Literally nobody has rated it below 50 and then there is a sudden rise at the lowest section. Seems pretty obvious then.
Plus, I've read the manga so I know that it can't possibly be thaaaat bad no matter how terribly they adapt it.
everyone saw this coming. I don't think India is liberal in terms of religion and with an extreme right-wing party, the situation cannot be worse.
As a long time fan of Ror, The anime was insulting, they literally used slideshows and motion manga( basically 2 fps scenes) in some flashbacks. The character designs were completely butchered, and animation was nothing even good, at its best maybe 3/10. It pains me seeing a beautiful female main character look like baki ( no offence to baki, but they literally made her baki)
I can assure you its not trolls made to decrease the score, but just longtime fans of the manga, just very angry at the horrible adaptation of an epic manga
Ah, I see. I haven't been able to watch it yet hence I couldn't comment on the animation quality. However even that shouldn't warrant such a low score is what I assumed.
And as you said, it should warrant a 3/10, which is what I mentioned as well, that at the most 30/100 is understandable, a completely low is like weird.
I mean comparatively, if my favorite manga is like at a 10/10, something that utterly butchers what my favorite would be exactly what I like, hence a 1/10
One shouldn't take everything into aspect when rating something, since it makes scores which contradict your beliefs.
Even the worst of anime have something redeemable, doesn't mean they should have a higher score, at the end I just use relative ratings, if an anime is worse than an anime on my list, just as good, or better?
If I have been following the manga for a long time, I will most definitely be connected to it, and have special feelings. Thus something which shatters these feelings and makes one cry ( I was on the edge of crying) should get a 1/10
Well, I use the smiley system, but isn't 1/10 a valid option? Sure, if it's done via fake accounts, then those scores should be removed, but other than that I don't see a problem with it.
I don't think even 90% of the people who gave it a low score was because of the Hindu deity thing. I love the manga and I just finished the ep 2 and if I am being completely honest, I can see why the manga readers are disappointed with the anime. And ofcourse there are people who would go as far as rating it a 1 because of it. The soundtrack and voice acting were amazing but the animation really dulls the shine of it. It is average or slightly below average at best. Most of the times I don't really care about the animation so I am still able to enjoy but in a battle heavy anime, people expect it to have great animation.

For an anime only, this is pretty good. I really liked the fights and voice acting. Animation was also quite good. Can't wait for next season.
Also, I am from India and was pretty disappointed that it wasn't available on Netflix, even though I bought this month's subscription keeping record of ragnarok in mind. Anyways had to watch the old fashioned way and I really enjoyed watching it. 9/10
Thats not really a lot of people and shiva is technically present in Japanese mythology due to buddhism. The point is that hinduism isn't particularly special in its lack adoption in japan and they have depicted many religious figures in many anime through the decades so this isn't a new occurence so it shouldn't be treated as such.

I think you're getting shiva and Vishnu mistaken lol, vishnu is the deity portrayed in buddhism. Secondly, Hinduism isn't special in it's lack of adoption, I never stated that it was. Lastly, I could talk about the geopolitics of Christianly and Japan's overseas allies but this is a site about logging animanga so no.
