Why do people compare Kimi no Na wa with A Silent Voice when they are completely unrelated?

They were both released in 2016, they're both movies, they're both extremely popular, they both appeal to a teenage audience, they're both emotional, and they both have amazing animation and soundtracks.

That doesn't qualify as being similar enough to be compared to. Would you compare Naruto with Kimi no Na wa? No, because they are completely different things. A Silent Voice is popular, but definitely not as popular as Kimi no Na wa. They are both incomparable. Yet, as you can clearly see, the recommended section recommends A Silent Voice more than Tenki no Ko or Kimi no Suizou wo Tabetai.

  For the recommendation part, it's just that they're the most popular, relatively new anime movies that have similar target audiences. For the comparing part, it's just that because they're the two most popular anime movies, there's going to be a lot of people who one of them as their favorite. So the people who have Your Name as their favorite will compare the two with the people who have A Silent Voice as their favorite. It doesn't mean that they think they deal with similar things or anything like that.

Again, the recommendation part doesn't make sense when better matching contemporaries exist. Tenki no Ko and Kimi no Suizou wo Tabetai is much more similar to Kimi no Na wa than Koe no Katachi is. But in every single anime listing site, you go to the recommendation section of Kimi no Na wa and there's Koe no Katachi on top. That's what I don't get.

Well they're both right after A Silent Voice in the recommended section so I wouldn't say that they're being under-recommended or anything, and I've already said this twice: the reason people are recommending one if they liked the other isn't because they have similar themes, but because they're just the most popular, and they have similar target audiences. If someone was asking "Hey I just finished Your Name and I thought it was really good! Do you know any other good anime movies?" It's a pretty obvious decision to recommend A Silent Voice.

So you're saying they can't be compared because there are other comparisons? As if a series can only be compared with one other series? I hope you know how ignorant that sounds. Stretch here gave a few solid similarities, you know, the requirements for a reasonable comparison, and instead of addressing them you outright dismiss them as if they aren't similarities at all. Yes, there are obviously differences between the two as well, which is why a comparison is made to begin with. They share some similarities, and differences, so they are often compared. What more is there for you to be confused on?

  You need some time to process what I said. You're thinking that I'm saying Tenki no Ko is better than Koe no Katachi, which is not the case. I'm saying one is being recommended as a similar anime, way too much, than anime that are actually supposed to be similar to it. I'm not even talking about the writing, I thought I already said this in the post. Many people just believe that Koe no Katachi is similar to Kimi no Na wa, just look at how many people recommend that and then the gap between Tenki no Ko. I'm not dismissing anything, I agree that they are similar in terms of good and well directed animation and great OSTs, but they are not similar at all when it comes to story, like... not even a single bit. A Silent Voice encounters serious topics, like bullying, depression, social insecurities, redemption, while Kimi no Na wa is about pursuing love, love that the mind forgot, but the heart remembers. Yet one side keeps insisting that they are similar, as you can see in the picture. Isn't Attack on Titan also well-animated, has a great story and mind blowing soundtracks, and also considered as a timeless classic among anime fans? Where is Attack on Titan on the recommendations page? There's a clear difference between "Wow that anime was great, I'd like to see more good anime similar to that" and "Wow that anime was great, I'd like to see more good anime". I simply find it jarring how people believe that A Silent Voice is that similar to Kimi no Na wa, not just in AniList, but in the entire community, whenever someone mentions Kimi no Na wa. Hence, the post, which is me trying to understand why people do that.

It's like comparing AOT: The Final Season and FMAB. Which one deserves to be on the highest spot? What I meant was, it's comparing as a whole. Comparing it as a whole doesn't mean that it has to be on the same genre or no.

Well... that's different, they are judging which one is more worthy of the title of #1 ranked anime, which is childish. Go to Attack on Titan's page, FMA:B is nowhere to be seen in the recommendation section.

  I mean overall, I can agree with your statement above (on the thread body). Based on my experience, people usually compare both movies based on a whole (or to be exact, which one is better), if you get what I mean. I've watched both movies and I know that Koe no Katachi is slightly different than Kimi no Na Wa. I don't know what aspect are they comparing but most people would compare on which is better.

    I can surely respect that. I do think that overall A Silent Voice shares many similarities with Kimi no Na wa (Not more than Tenki no Ko tho) it's well directed and animated, has good OST. Most people do compare which one is better, but I don't care about that. I'm just having trouble understanding why so many people think that A Silent Voice is more similar to Kimi no Na wa than its contemporaries, clearly when it's so different, plot and theme wise. Every time, if you see someone on social media say "I liked Kimi no Na wa, can you guys suggest any other movies like Kimi no Na wa" its safe to assume that that person wants an anime with similar plot and theme, but there is always a good amount of people telling them to watch A Silent Voice. I just don't know what's up with that lol.

    Ah I see what's going on here. If that's your point, all I can say is I can agree that Koe no Katachi and Kimi no Na Wa have different themes. Koe no Katachi is way more into 'Bullying and Rehabilitation' while Kimi no Na Wa is way more into 'Romance-Supernatural'. As a conclusion, yes both movies have different themes and significantly doesn't have similar plots.

Actually, Naruto and One Piece are more alike than Kimi no Na wa and Koe no Katachi. In Naruto, Naruto has a distinct goal, he wants to be Hokage. Luffy wants to be a pirate king. They are both goofy protagonists, are very caring, love eating a lot. They have a lot of similarity.

    What the hell? You haven't even properly watched A Silent Voice if you think it's even 1% romance. There is literally none of it. Absolutely none. Shouko likes Ishida, one sided affection but she never confesses, that does not qualify as a romance. And if you watched Tenki no Ko then you'd know how similar it is to Kimi no Na wa, thousand times more similar than A Silent Voice. That fact that you call A Silent Voice "practically identical to Kimi no Na wa" is beyond me.

If someone told me that they liked Your Name a lot and would fangirl about it, I would definitely recommend A Silent Voice. It's similar visually and they both have a fair bit of heartwrenching (but not too much) melodrama.

Also, not to start shit, but I would never recommend Tenki no Ko or that Pancreas movie in good conscience because they're kinda bad. While I would not call A Silent Voice or Your Name the pinnacle of cinema, they're at least watchable and enjoyable.

And your comparison to Naruto is totally bizarre. Obviously Naruto has very little in common with either of those movies, if only a touch of melodrama and immaturity. That's totally like comparing apples with oranges, which doesn't apply here.

Bad or not, is subjective. But it is a fact, that Tenki no Ko's story and Kimi no Suizou wo Tabetai's story is much more similar to Kimi no Na wa. When someone is saying "I loved Kimi no Na wa, can you suggest some anime with similar story?" and you tell them to watch A Silent Voice, that's a mistake on your part.
A Silent Voice also has very little in common with Kimi no Na wa. I already wrote this, but they have nothing in common, other than an emotional story and good animation. But there are plenty of anime with an emotional story and good animation, that broadens the recommendations too much. To me, A Silent Voice and Kimi no Na wa is definitely apples and oranges. Naruto has sick animation, it has romance, it has emotional moments, it has good soundtracks, is it similar to Kimi no Na wa? No. Would I recommend Naruto as the first thing to someone who likes Kimi no Na wa? No.

  I simply don't agree. I don't think they're all that different. Like sure, they don't have the same story. But putting anime in the recommendations list by going off a checklist of 'similar story?' 'similar characters?' 'similar character motivations?' 'similar art style?' etc etc seems as laughable as writing reviews going off the same checklist.
  It also, obviously, has to do with popularity. It's more likely that a person has seen both Your Name and A Silent Voice, and less likely that they have also seen Tenki no Ko or that Pancreas stuff. And people who liked Your Name also voted that they loved A Silent Voice and thought it was similar. It's a valid rec. People who like westerns probably want to see other westerns that others think are good. People who like melodramas probably want to see other melodramas that others think are good. Simple as.
  I personally am much more miffed about the average and mean scores about really old and obscure anime that I love. The best comedy I've ever seen has an average score of 66%. And it simply has to do with demographics of people who watch old and obscure anime. They tend to rate stuff more harshly.
  Really, if you don't agree with the rec, just dislike it. Just like I put five stars on that badly rated anime I love. It's a game of statistics.

    I totally understand what you're trying to say, I just kinda find it a bit jarring. Last week, a fairly popular person on Twitter tweeted about how he liked Kimi no Na wa and how he'd like to watch more anime like that. Obviously he means similar story. So I'd kind of expect recommendations of Pancreas or Tenki no Ko (Which is the second most popular Shinkai film). But its kind of sad how no mentioned it, yet there were tons of people telling him to watch A Silent Voice. I just wondered why. Because I think that recommendations, based on one anime, is obviously about similar themes and similar plot, I simply can't recommend Attack on Titan to some new anime fan who says that they liked Kimi no Na wa and would like to watch more anime like that, they are both good anime, but they aren't similar. That's all I meant by this post, although some people think I'm talking about which anime is better lol.

    im gonna give you something interesting i havent watched weathering with you nor the pancreas movie but i have watched your name and a silent voice one after another they give the similar feel or tone i should say, their plots dont have to be similar an example would be a series thats cliche but executed perfectly people would enjoy it not because of how cliche it is but because of how it was executed

My answer:
So 'Kimi no Nawa' and 'Koe no Katachi' are both very popular and highly rated, so the thing is most anime fans have already watched them. However, for a newer anime fan who for example just watched either one of the movies, I would find it natural to recommend the other one. The reason why is because they're some of the best that anime has to offer in terms of movies. I wouldn't say they're recommended because their themes are similar or anything, they're just both at the top of the must-watch list when it comes to anime movies.

Don't be a delusional, they are both romances and they are both dramas so they can be comparable. Ofc since it's romance it's a very subjective matter to compare which anime is the best... I can't do it as I think they are both at the same level. Also I don't understand where you get the idea that 1 sided romance aint really romance, but to be fair I'm not about to get interested in understanding your logic, maybe you're just young and unexperience in this field.

    You seem to be in need of some help. You're awfully ignorant even though you preach to be old on the internet, which is already weird as it is. There is a reason why I pulled up that specific Wikipedia quote, because it mentions romance in media, but you seem to lack basic comprehension skills.
    The entire A Silent Voice movie is about serious topics like bullying, redemption, social insecurities, suicide, you're labelling it as a romance when there was no hint of romance in the entirety of the movie, until halfway through when Shouko tries to convey her love for Ishida, but stops herself thinking that it's a bad idea. The movie was never about romance, neither was the manga, never ever. And if that small part of the movie makes you think that A Silent Voice is romance, then Attack on Titan must be a big ecchi for you because of that one scene with Pieck, am I right?
    Since you're so time conscious, why don't you use that time to create your own meaningful topics for discussion, let's see how far you go with that ignorant attitude of yours.

I mean, tbh the main reason is because they're both popular anime movies that are highly rated and for a similar audience, which makes the comparisons like "which one is better of the two" easier. It's dumb, but it happens with everything - people compare Chainsaw Man and Solo Leveling just because they're two of the highest rated things to read that are popular right now. Despite one being manga and one being manhwa, it's all just because they're good and popular and for similar audiences.

I see where you've gone wrong here bud, a comparison can be used to point out not only similarities but also dissimilarities. So by stating that you believe the two titles to not be related or share the same themes you are by definition making a comparison, to sum it up proverbially you believe. "They go together like chalk and cheese".

Koe no Katachi doesn't even have romance, it's only one sided attraction from Shouko's part. That doesn't qualify as a romance.

Unrequited love is a staple of romance stories, especially in anime. That's a pretty large recurring theme to overlook.

As for what exactly makes them similar and why people ask this question... I'm unsure what answer would satisfy you, you also seem to have started quite firmly in the position of. "They are not at all similar, I don't understand why people think they are". So, trying to convince you they are similar seems like a thankless and fruitless task when you've already made up your mind. On a side note I haven't seen either of them but I will happily wait for the...

And it's not like those movies aren't popular, they are popular, yet Koe no Katachi is more recommended than any of those movies.   Things do not have to be similar in order to grant getting recommendations, this is speculation but maybe the stories stir and conjure similar emotional responses from the audience. You seem to be well versed in the source material, have you considered this?
