the first part was so perfect that ppl actually thought what came after was bad. I mean in now way is it bad. i actually think they did a gr8 job to progress the story even after ykw.

Facts. Like yeah the second part was weaker than the first, but it was hardly bad by any means.

I personally didn't find anything wrong with it, aside from Near and Mello being very uninteresting antagonists. I've heard some people complain about the ending, which confuses me a little as I thought the ending was magnificent. I believe a part of that hate comes from people who liked L a lot, so they were disappointed when he stopped being relevant

I'm actually a big hater of the ending but that's because there was some fucked up logic at the very end don't you think? Or that's at least how it felt like to me.

When you go from the very clearly amazing story when L was still alive and then go to anything that isn't that while the drop in quality is definitely not a lot to show lost it's spark of L's being a cunning genius, L and N are pretty different in their personalities, and the dynamic between Light and L being lost.

All these elements of the first part of death note was an absolute thrill, honnestly having the final boss be literally right next to the protagonist is what made it super thrilling. When they took away all these elements and especially L as a character the show really wasn't the same show. Because of the absence of L things weren't the same, they couldn't replace him with N because they aren't the same people.

So while the quality of the show didn't nosedive the show was very much different, and the show was different without him.

The introduction of the new characters was way too rapid, Light becoming a caricature of his former self, way too rushed storytelling - I mean ffs in the first 3 episodes of the second part we already see Light's sister get kidnapped, Mello getting the notebook, Mello randomly testing the notebook, Near's "look how smart I am I can use satelites to literally find anyone" - "But L (Light), you make it sound like it's a piece of cake" and of course he does it anyways as if it was indeed a piece of cake, so why say that shit in the first place - the whole of SPK getting killed by Mello. The Kira force invading Mello's headquarters by devising some weird plan to give Light's father the eyes, when he could've just used a bodycam and had Misa look at the footage. Mello somehow fucking escaping cause plot. Soichiro getting the Shinigami eyes and then fucking DYING like it's nothing. All of that WHILE we're getting our first introduction to the characters we're supposed to care about - it's like Death Note suddenly turned into a fan-service filled rom-com that in its first episode manages to clearly outline the stereotypical character traits that'll define their entire character moving forward. On top of all that, Mello and Near are shit characters too. L was interesting due to what he did, his anonymity to begin with, his trick with the TV stations etc. an absolutely genius character introduction. While it feels like the authors are trying to make us think Mello and Near are interesting, but instead of actually making them interesting, they just made Mello eat chocolate and make weird faces and made Near curl his hair and stack dice, it's as if they thought the only reason L was a good character was because he sat funny and held spoons in a weird way.

I'm so conflicted when it comes to rating this thing, I wish it was on the site in two seasons. The first 25 episodes were incredibly entertaining and well made, but after that, almost everything except for like the last two episodes was pretty fucking shit.

Also what the fuck happened since episode 20, did the director change? The camerawork and pacing made a 180 and it felt like someone else was in charge ever since. The faster pacing worked in episodes 20-25 because of all the build up we had seen prior to this and the fact that those episodes were basically the culmination and conclusion to the plot, but maintaining the high pace when you're introducing entirely new characters was just not the right thing to do.

I think it'd be like if you were watching an anime about Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty pretending to be on his side the entire time and 19 episodes in Holmes died and was replaced by Herlock Shlomes and works out who Moriarty is in the remaining 6 episodes. It just leaves you a bit confused and worse off. You were enjoying the current dynamic and now one half of it has left and replaced with an inferior versions that is actually better than the original. To be fair, I haven't seen Death Note in over 10 years so maybe it's just me being 13 and thinking L is cool and N isn't, so that's why a lot of people feel the same.

I feel the live action movie from 2007 or whatever was a much better ending than the anime though. L basically tricks Light into writing L's name in the Death Note and fakes his death only to come back a day later to implicate Light as Kira. It turned out that L wrote his own name in the Death Note to die 23 days later and since his death was set in stone Light couldn't kill L before that date and thus he played up "losing" to Light so he would implicate himself as Kira and L could prove it.

Amen. The latter section while being inferior - is still at least great supernatural thriller. Near and Mello get tons of undeserved shit. The section lasts only 11 episodes and the last 2 episodes are among the series' best ones. The only point I personally disliked was that new shinigami's appearance because he delivered on a silver plate which rules are fake. I think that was a cheap move for a series where information and lie detection is absolutely everything. I think that Sidoh just needed some foreshadowing from Ryuuk, throwing at some point a line that one day the real owner of his notebook might show up.
I will also add that I just generally find it weird that people really drop after episode 25. If I watched 25 episodes of a series just because that ONE particular character was there then I'd quickly come to a conclusion that I wasn't enjoying it all that much to begin with.
I'm not surprised at all that Kato defended Near 3 times on his channel.

The 2nd part is not shit compared to other anime. The 2nd part is shit when you compare it with the 1st part.

On it's own the 2nd part of Death Note is a good 7.5, while the 1st part is a 9.5

In terms of the anime the second part is very heavily stretched out so has even more episodes than needed.

The other issue is that the original was meant to end in a similar way Part 1 did with
L writing his name into the Death Note to catch Light out by essentially fixing his death in advance

But Shonen Jump asked for the series to keep running so we got Part 2.

This is kind of touched upon in Bakuman the duos work after this in which a Death Note analogy explores some of the issues that came up during the mangas run including not being able to end a story in the way you want.
As well as touching upon how if you have a story about two great minds going against each other, it doesn't make sense to keep going if one of them is removed.
