Was Light (Kira) Yagami's position on a Utopia honestly bad at all?

  He was definitely in the wrong, shown later in the anime, we see all the nasty side affects of people running scared that every little thing they do will get them killed by Kira. A society shouldn’t be scared shitless of an unknown, all powerful vigilante, who’s judge jury and executioner.

  While I disagree with Light, he was still my favorite character from the anime and I whole heartedly wanted him to win. I personally love it when the bad guy is the main character, or anytime the bad guy actually wins for once (as long as he’s likable anyway).

  Light was a pretty short-sighted utilitarian, so his position wasn't really a utopia. It was much more like a 1984-style totalitarian state with Light as the ultimate arbiter of morality, making him god, essentially. He either didn't take his rule into account when doing his utilitarian calculus or determined it unimportant to him, guaranteeing that he was either wrong or didn't actually care about bringing a utopia about. To me, this confirms that Light is a villain and is wrong about "utopia".

  L wasn't that much better though; he liked feeing smart and beating people by solving cases and falsely justifying it by working within the system (a system that he knows is broken and corrupt).

  I think no, too.I dont wanna live in a place where i can die anytime just because of some god complexed idiot thinks all criminals deserves to die regardless of their crime(Or something like that its been a long time since i watched Death Note)
  But i still like the anime and im glad he died.

  The point where I would say his vision really got bad was in episode 32. Mikami asked Takada to say on broadcast that Kira will start punishing also people who don't contribute to society with their capabilities. Light says that he starts going overboard but right after corrects himself that he is just too hasty.
  But as far as his approach to crime is concerned - no, I wouldn't disagree with it. Wars not existing anymore and crime rate decreased by almost 3/4. Death Note events happened during years 2003-2010 (besides 2011 and 2019 in two manga one shots). Those results were confirmed by him in the last episode as well as in one of oneshots by Near. It's impossible to determine when it went down this rapidly but since he had his hands free to act for 6 years straight, I guess that middle would be a more or less fair estimation point (especially since crime would over time decrease even more), so let's say 2006.
  Now just do a research on ALL of military conflicts and ALL of heavy crime committed from years 2006-2020. And when you already have all this data in front of you (and I mean it, don't just think "yeah I know - a lot of bad shit but still"), think how much would world actually benefit if it was erased and drastically reduced respectively. How many lives would not have been ruined or taken for no good reason.

  I say yes and no because that puts the potential risk of rape,murder etc at a very low percentage but I would still be scared cause I know someone is watching over us like this

  I still don't have a clear answer. I think the moral dilemma was one of the best thing Death Note offered.
