I felt like after L's death they could have ended it or made the near and mello arc better. I wish they introduced them both better and had better character development. I thought the ending episode was cool but not worth the dragging. In my opinion the show would have been a 10 in my eyes if they ended it after the first arc.
Sometimes when my friends ask me why I gave Death Note an 8 and they ask me why, I basically tell them exactly what you just said and they call me crazy lol
I gave it an 8.5 myself which means I liked the show quite a bit. But I just thought some flaws with the second half just didn't make it as good as it could have been.
seems like the default opinion on death note (which i agree with) is that eps 1-25 are great and what follows kinda sucks
imo, they just mega-rushed the stuff after ep 25 (which were apparently done with the same quality in the manga as the previous stuff, tho i haven't read it yet)

What's interesting is that the "rushing" started already in episode 20, it felt like an entirely different director was put on board from there onwards. The reason the last five episodes before episode 25 didn't feel as rushed to some, is probably because of the fact that the series was approaching its climax so it made sense for the show to pick up the pace.

I hated it the first time I watched Death Note but now I don't mind it as much. In my opinion it was necessary for proper closure. You can't just effectively descend the world into darkness and leave it at that, that'd be rather unsatisfying. Now I'm not terribly fond of Near and Mello either, but the general idea of having two successors work together to defeat the person who was smarter than their master isn't a bad one.

Mello wasn’t defeated though. Both Near and Mello defeated Light remember. If it wasn’t for Mello then Light would’ve won. Don’t ask me to put in a spoiler tag either, this a discussion after all.
Death Note was THE big show while I was a teenager and I held strong opinions on it. It's been years since I've rewatched it now and this exact thought has haunted me for a while. I hated the second half at the time, but teenage me was wrong about a lot of things. I kinda want to go back and see if it's gotten better.

Unpopular opinion here, but I remember when I first watched Death Note I actually preferred the second half to the first half; or at least I preferred the second half of the game of cat and mouse between Near/Mello and Light than I did the Yotsuba arc with Light teaming up with L. At the time I thought Light forgetting his memories and teaming up with L was boring.
My opinion's a little bit different now. I actually quite enjoy that arc a lot now. I still enjoy the second half of the show, however, but I also fall into an unpopular opinion here since I really like Mello and Near. There's more of Near's deductive reasoning explored in the manga that we don't see in the anime, and that makes a lot of things look pretty rushed or like Near is more OP than he actually is. The second half of the show did sort of rush some things, although honestly, I don't have as much of a problem with that because I think we'd be seeing a lot of the same theories/deductions L already made in part 1. It'd feel annoying for the audience to see Near jump through the exact same hoops again.
Yes, the ending was very rushed and Near just wasn't as entertaining as an antagonist as L was.
The story dipped but it was still just as thrilling and that's enough for me

If I want to watch Death Note I usually will look to just doing the first part of the Director's Cut instead since it ends where I'd prefer the series to really end.

N was really childlike who used to play with Some Godamn Puzzles and Mello was totally addicted to chocolates. Unlike L who used to take time and find out what was Kira's next move, N was able to do that instantly which was indeed boring and took all the fun of Mystery in the anime. Even the ending was not that good.
They could have added funny scenes with N as they did with L to make the 2nd part a bit better.
While it wasn't bad, I think it was definitely not as good as the first half. I don't even dislike Near and Mello, but at the same time, I do not find them as engaging and intriguing as L. It brought the series down for me from a possible 10 to an 8 or a 9. Still an amazing show overall.

It's kinda difficult to explain what I mean. As DN the anime goes on, it just... loses something it had before. Or rather, it loses so many things that its difficult to pinpoint exactly what is the most important difference between the early arcs and the later ones.
The main things I've seen sighted are:
A combination of these factors and others lead to the series kinda falling apart at the seams. But what I want to know is: why do you think things evolved in this way? Do you think that a lot of this was done to just keep the series going and keep making money? That's the easy answer but that doesn't necessarily mean its wrong.
Why did Death Note turn out the way it did? Curious what the community thinks :)
