It was okay. The best thing about it, there were no sign of transparent hair. That's always a plus.
Sadly, we didn't get any scene of her studying to pass her exam nor of her training to become a better witch through failures.

  I mean its a 12 episode anime and its called "The Journey of Elaina" not how Elaina became a witch.

    I don't think we need any scenes of that. It is made clear enough in the first episode that she is the person that works hard for what she wants and doesn't give up that easily so I think it was the right decision to not include them. I would even say that this is a good design choice because it does not repeat the (above) said information too many times for someone who didn't catch it. Well I like this type of story telling.

I hate the moonlogick of hiring some weirdo to beat up your kid and make them do chores. Just to teach them a lesson? She didn't even pull a Mister Miyagi and do a "By cooking me dinner for a month: Your mana has grown" or whatever... I feel like a good soundtrack could save some of the more awkward scenes (Like the crying one). Animation was ok, and I can't resist a loli in a witch hat unfortunately, so I guess I'm watching the whole thing.

  I liked the crying scene without soundtrack, just having the noise of the waterfalls without any other background sound worked for me

It's to early too judge, but I hope the soundtrack gets better. It didn't feel really special, and I think in a series about travelling it is a really important aspect to give a good atmosphre. Though I did quite enjoy it. I would've liked it better if they showed more of the progress of Elaina, because I do agree it was a bit fast paced at times. Though considering I love this episodical and adventure types of series, this should be a treat. I don't expect it to be anything like Kino, since it does have a more philosophical and more of a critique to modern society type of thing, and MNT seems to be more lighthearted, but if it's in the same style, I'm digging it. Also, who could say no to beautiful witch loli, like, c'mon.

The episode was good and all but It's pretty rushed. Elaina at first is 14 years old and next thing you know she's 18. I didn't read the LN or manga but I wish they described why there's witches in the world.

I agree with the pacing being too fast in more than one way. I could understand the motives, but I didn't have much time to appreciate them because it felt like every minute had a hard cut on the mood. It also seems that some important parts were skipped. This could've used 10 extra minutes.
I hope the next episodes have stories spread a bit longer for better story-breathing and world-building. Elaina seems to have lots of potential as a main character.
(please don't make it an advertisement to sell Elaina pillows or something)

Feels rushed, the first episode would be better if it uses 2x normal anime duration just like Kanata no Astra or Tate no Yuusha.
Hopefully it'll expand the world building and character.

I thought it was okay. Has some relaxing vibes to it. I guess they just wanted to rush through the starting to get to the actually journey part.

I enjoyed the first episode. It would have been nice if the anime started with Elaina’s experience in a few different countries and then go back to her origin story. That's the way it went in the light novel. This episode adapted chapter 9 from the first volume.
Is anyone else reading the light novels? Or the manga?

I agree i think it was a little rushed i think some scenes of her training for her exam wouldve been nice so we could get a little better understanding as to why she thought the others were weak but overall i thought it was a very good first episode and i cant wait for more

Pretty good. Really like the MC, interesting character design too. Very good fight animation and directing, impact of attacks could really be felt. Didn't expect her to start crying, that was a refreshing plot twist, though at the expense of being less satisfying to watch.

i cannot be the only one who thinks this ep was so awkward. like ok sis u did chores for some hippy lady for a month straight. i get that she was trying to pursue a dream of whatever, but where did she think doing chores was gonna take her lmao. her breaking down like, that was kinda uncalled for -_-
i dont mind how speedy the training pace was, since the show will be about her adventures as a witch. not as a witch trainee
chile anyways, its only the first ep uhm dont have any expectations. THE FOOD SCENES SLAP THOUGH I GIVE IT THAT.
omg & the art is pretty. like its basic, but the colour palette is cute.

  She had no other option... As a witch who managed to pass the exam easily, all the others were jealous and didn't accept her.

  How was her breakdown uncalled for? The only witch who accepted her didn't instruct her for a whole month, she wanted to pursue her dreams so badly, but she spent all this time without learning anything new. This explosion of feelings was absolutely necessary.

I have not read the source material but I'm kinda surprised that people think it's rushed. I mean the tittle is literally "The Journey". I don't think there's a need to spend the first 2-3 episodes on her training arc because it is unnecessary. I think the first episode has done well in showing us what kind of person she is and set the tone for the show. Also, I like that the show doesn't give us info bomb about the world and it's magic system like other fantasy shows. All we need to know is that magic exists and witches exist, and with that, it is likely that other fantasy tropes also exist. As i said, it really sets the tone that the show is not about an adventure to save the world, but an episodic journey of a cute hard working young witch. At least that's what i got from watching the first episode.

  I think the people who thougt this is rushed just had wrong expectations for the show and/or didn't expect that story would be told in that way. The most common way of telling a story is to show the most prominent "main" timeline first (=after becoming witch in this case), and then tell about her past after some time. But this anime chose to tell this part first, and I guess some people didn't catch it, so they thought that this is a main part (timeline) = needs more development. But the things went too fast so it felt unexpectedly rushed for them, I guess.
  Personally I think that this is a good design choice for this type of story and I like that it went this way.

Well I for one did not think it felt "rushed" per se, but more like they decided they didn't need anymore details on her upbringing. Which is fine. If it means we get to the real purpose of the story sooner, then I'm all for it. I know enough about her to be fully ready for the next episode featuring her many years older.
Music-wise, are ya'll really not happy with the music! I thought it was delightful and there were only two significant scenes without a backing track from what I recall, and one of them was the exposition scene about the true nature of her training which technically ended with a musical score as the conversation ended. And the music was delightful. Very colorful, strong instrument choice, and a very effective mood. I don't see many premieres feature such satisfying music.
And the animation was way better than i expected. I did not expect an actual battle scene, and it was really well done. Animation team clearly knows what they are doing.
Yeah this was just strong all around. Now I'm just curious where the story goes. The promises to the mother seemed like they could be foreshadows to possible character arcs, especially the one about never thinking you're better than others. I'd love for some thorough exploration of being too prideful of one's skills as a witch and learning from that. Orr, this show could just go the episodic journey route and slowly build the world. But I feel like there was just enough tension what with witches denying her an apprenticeship, and the mother's advice to run away from danger that this show may tackle some more intense subject matter.

Honestly, a lot of things about the animation really bother me. I think it's the line work. I find it really distracting.
