I've rewatched it 3 times already. Can we just appreciate how well this anime was made. Just the manga was already breathtaking and the way they portrayed it in the anime was good. I really love this anime because it's one of those curve ball animes you never expect. I love the thought and effort that was put into the universe's bestiary. How about you? What are your thoughts?

  I recently watched it and I know I am very late on it, but my god did I love the show. From the storytelling, the characters, the voice acting, and most of all the OST's. The backstory behind Mitty and Prushka was none other than a masterpiece, as much as we hated the man Bondrewd was an amazing character he was a man driven by science. Bondrewd at times seemed so sincere he made you believe that maybe he isn't a bad guy, just maybe we can understand him. Whether we did or not he was truly a great character. I indeed have plenty more to talk about, about Mitty, Prushka, and Riko but I'll leave it here and see what you guys have to say. Every bit of this show I loved, I came to ask how everyone else felt about the show.

Personally, I loved the world building.
Ever since the Abyss and Relics were mentioned, I was very intrigued and curious to what the world holds.
I'd love more anime like this, leaving me captivated

    Alright man you string up your children naked when they get in trouble and we'll see how that goes. As long as you explain to them its to farther expand the plot and character progression in their lives I'm sure you'll be fine.

It has one of the most gorgeous and breathtaking set pieces in anime ever, the animation is really good as well. I have some problems with the show that drag it down for me, but it's undeniably a real shocker when it comes to a lot of its elements.

  I just wanted to share my view here now that I caught up with the latest movie. (I did skip the summaries though).
  I mean, I'm trying to be objective here.
  There are not a lot of animes where I can remember gripping what I had in hand (my couch armrest this time) because the show was really intense. Made in abyss is one of these.
  You start caring a lot with the MCs, getting carried away in the abyss with them. And when they face trouble, danger, sadness, happiness, pain, or relief you feel it with them.
  That is sign of a good show to me !
  Pack that with a unique drawing style, and a soft score easily recognisable and this becomes one great show that can become of the greatest.
  Just wanted to share that. Feel free to comment if you disagree, I'd be glad to know about that. (And if you do agree also, fo sure !)

    Bro did you watch the movie? It was the most disgusting anime I've ever seen. literally a scene where Reg is being tortured while a tube is attached to his crotch for when he pisses himself and the camera zooms in as the tube fills with piss while his screams of agony fill the background.

I haven't watched the movie yet (it's on the immediate queue, I'll get to it whenever I decide to watch anime instead of doing homework), but the show was pretty good.
I normally heavily dislike shows like this (it's outside the genre of show I love watching), so the fact that I found the show tolerable already points to how good it is.
I just hope that they answer the questions I have about the world (there's a bunch, most of which are plot relevant so it'd be dumb to not answer them eventually) at some point, and I mean answers way more detailed than the partial explanation about the curse of the abyss (ep12). I think if they do that it'll make me actually like the show instead of only finding it decent, but when people put in important details like that it makes me really really yearn for an actual explanation of them.

  Well the hole point of the adventure is to know more about the curse of abyss and why it exists and to go to the bottom of the abyss to find whatever it is waiting for Riko. It’s been touched a bit more in the movie.

Despised Made In Abyss.
The two main characters are annoying. It also made me super uncomfortable. The plot is meh imo.
The bottom of the abyss never intrigued like how outside the walls did in AOT.
The annoying one with the glasses has to be my most hated MC. Reg takes close second.

    Will never reccomend that anime to anyone.
    With reg the walking plot device having all the abilities to traverse the abyss. The one with glasses despite knowing so much shit about the abyss decides to go into it anyways even knowing the dangers

    Yeah probably, but it's short so I wanted to finish it. There are also more reasons why I disliked it, for example I didn't like the main characters Riko, Reg and Nanachi at all.

Made in Abyss felt extremely average to me, mainly because:
1. The abyss itself feels empty, uninteresting & extremely easy as 2 dumb kids are speedrunning it
2. The protagonist duo is terrible, you can replace Reg with a plank that shoots lasers and I wouldn't notice
3. I don't find the way the curse works satisfying
That conversation around "Daddy's pole" in the movie felt so unnecessary
To be fair to Made in Abyss, I am definitely not the target audience as I only ended up watching it because my ex was a big fan of it and wanted us to watch it together

I know that he can look weird but to claim stuff like that without proof isnt good.
As far as i know the claim came from scenes of the manga which werent that problematic to begin with compared to what other anime and manga put out, the other claim from one of his with google translated twitter tweets that were taken out of context if i remember correctly.

One other thing to note that is that there are differences between different cultures and how they view and express things.

the japanese people i frequent with (theyre not otakus) dont see much of a problem with the anime and the manga and they have a different more pragmatical/rational view on this and anime overall. Also Fantasy and Art do not necessarily reflect what the autor likes per se irl. This misconception thankfully got disproven by scientists.

  also as i said different culture they view it differently. Also its fictive. to differentiate between fiction and reality is a important features homo sapiens (note the sapiens in the term) has/should have.
  I find it interesting that its instantly assumed that he is a pedophile when in fact nothing really points toward it as far as i know (else we would need to remove cherubim lol) and that then violent fantasies seem to surface which seem to show the psychopathic tendencies of some people despite the fact that nothing is proven nothign happened etc.

    Name me another anime that has frequent child nudity, multiple instances of children pissing themselves from sheer agony with camera zoom ins, and children discussing sexual topics, since you've clearly "seen enough anime."

    You literally ignored my other arguments and i told you that what people draw is often not what they prefer irl, else every horror movie director etc would be all serial killer lol. Also that got disproven by criminology as well even as early as ernst gennat.
    The scenes you named are like i said nothing special, lol watch kodomo no jikan, ro kyu bu, now and then here and there, genocyber, and many others, same with manga(fire punch, innocent, Eden : Its an endless world). If you dont like it then dont watch anime, japanese culture is different from yours apparently and thats okay.
    You also ignore the context that some of the scenes like rikos whipping are meant to be comedic and that japan has different "nudity" culture being more open with nudity in publich baths etc. Furthermore some of the torture scenes etc may be digusting but they thrive forward the story and open up aspects of the villain that else wouldnt be as clear as that and are also quite realistic.
    Another thing i think you mentioned the papas rod scene. That is taken out of context and the director of the movie explains it in an interview: papas rod in this case means a rod that makes you a papa(dad) since you can create a baby with it, not the rod of bondrewd lol. Prushka knows about it because she dissected an animal.
    None of this however is proof that he is a pedophile not sure how old you are but you should know, that for that you would need more than some drawn image you dont like. I wouldnt say anything if it was like in the case of the "act-age" author since he was proven guilty and another point, some of your favourite animes also include "sexualized minors" like megumin(being only one year older than riko) from konosuba which according to your logic wouldnt make you any better lol. But all of this is fiction nobody who is 10 years old looks like ash from pokemon or has muscles like some of the shounen characters.

I don't like the torture genre and I will most likely never watch a show that has torture in it as a main genre, even if the show has a 100/100 rating. This of course makes me no expert on torture, but I believe in order to torture someone, being naked is not a requirement. Why does the character have to be naked? Because it adds to the dark aspect of the world? No, it can't be that, the person is being tortured, I think the aspect is portrayed well enough. There is no logical reason for a person to be naked when tortured. Oh, wait, maybe one does come to mind.... Ah yes, how could I forget, if the victim is naked, the torturer gets more pleasure from it, but doesn't this also mean the viewer would get more pleasure for watching it? And if that is not you and you do not gain pleasure from the victim being naked, then that leaves only one thing, the author is getting that pleasure. So essentially the naked aspect is for the pleasure of the viewer and/or author. It doesn't have a major impact on conveying how brutal and dark a world is because the torture does the job just fine.
TLDR: The author of Made in Abyss is a pedophile, and if you have zero problem with a naked kid being tortured sadly you are also a pedophile or you at least endorse it. Also, don't even think about replying with "NakEd KiDs aRe NorMaL iN JaPAn" because that is the dumbest argument ever, that is like saying murder is okay because it's normal in prison.
Finally, I'd like to say congratulations, you've made it through my post. Hopefully, for most reading this you agree with me and I'm sorry for wasting your time. For those who are grabbing their torch and pitchfork ready to white knight Made in Abyss, let it be known that I don't care about this crap(although everything I said is still what I think about Made in Abyss). I was just bored and wanted to see how far I could get your veins to pop out of your forehead.

To that i guess I'd say their intent wasnt even to torture. It was to experiment on him and figure out all his robo components and stuff. So it kinda makes sense that they'd make him naked, so that they can more easily experiment and explore all his robo parts/features. That scene was meant to be disturbing, not meant to be some sort of pedo fan service
There are instances in Made in Abyss where I was like, "why did they put this in?" But that "torture" scene played its part in the story and since it was disturbing and horrific, I was fine with it because it served its purpose

No logical reason? You know that humiliation is a type of/part of torture right? Why should anyone be getting pleasure from the torture scenes? You act as though it's inherently some kind of fan service. Apply your same logic to death scenes or any other form of tragedy. Is anyone meant to derive pleasure from them? No, they're meant to emotionally impact the audience and enhance the setting/story. You've got Koe no Katachi on your favorites list, so let's use that as an example. Shouko is depicted being bullied as a kid, but neither the audience nor the author is deriving pleasure from it. The only difference between scenes like that and those in Made in Abyss is the fact that Made in Abyss contains nudity. You can argue, "Shouko being bullied helps build the setting," but the same is true of Made in Abyss. You calling me a pedophile for enjoying Made in Abyss is like me saying that you like to bully deaf kids because you enjoyed Koe no Katachi.

I will admit I did not know Japanese culture was more 'okay' with nudity than others. I am wrong for thinking that the author is a paedophile. But for an Amercian (or anyone who lives in the Western half of the world) to view this and think thats okay, generally needs to re-evaluate the anime again.This isn't our culture and it will never be. Sexualizing little children and torturing them has never been accepted in Western culture. So I don't think we are out-of-line whatsoever to be disgusted by this.
I musnt blame the author I suppose, since he made this anime for Japanese culture, which is perfectly ok. But like I said, any westerner who views this and doesn't have a problem with it needs to take a step back and re-evaluate it again.

Even if it's normal in Japan, heavy emphasis on if, that doesn't make it morally justifiable. I have seen dozens of horror anime that have rape, torture, mutilation, etc. and none have bothered me to the degree that Made in Abyss has. Why? Because it's children, literal children. Adults don't suffer in this anime and manga, from what I've read and seen it is only children. That's not something that should be normalized as, "nothing special," "thrive forward the story," and "open up aspects of the the villain." It's not ok, it shouldn't be ok, and it will never be ok.
As I've said before, it has an amazing story, super interesting setting, and great adult character design, but casting children as the leads ruins all of it. I guarantee if you read Made in Abyss in public and someone saw you reading chapter 25 in particular, no one would think you aren't an absolute nonce.
You cannot argue that the level of child nudity, children in agony, and child torture in Made in Abyss isn't above and beyond unnecessary, gross, and disturbing. If you think there is nothing wrong, you are in the minority in that school of thought.
